I am currently enrolling the windows computers which are running on Local accounts to Azure AD and wondering what will happen to the data that are existing on the local account after enrollment? How can I access it afterward?

    Hi respected Bishal Bhandari,

Thanks for your valuable feedback. You can post back anytime when you free or need further help. I will still keep monitoring this case for you.

In the meantime, I would like to make a summary on this question. This will also help other community members to find solution much easier of they come across the same situation:

    Description:

When we register a windows computer to Azure AD, what will happen to the data on the local accounts..

    Environment:

    Office 365 for business.

    Suggestion:

Joining a computer to an AD domain creates an account in the domain for the computer. This allows the computer to exist as a controllable, configurable, authenticated, individual in the domain. This means you can force policies about everything from desktop appearance to windows updates to anything configurable in windows to the client, and it can be changed relative to the user logged into the client as well.

Your local user accounts will be unaffected and there will be no conflict with the domain user with the same name.

Appreciate your patience and understanding and thank you for your time and cooperation.

    Sincerely,

    Waqas Muhammad

    Dear respected Bishal Bhandari,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

As per your question, the joining a computer to a domain doesn't mess with the local accounts, unless your join the computer to the domain & promote it to a domain controller, in which case you'll no longer have local computer accounts.

However, If the domain has group policy it could potentially change members of users in the local admin and power users' group or even add in new users. But existing users on the local machine will remain unaffected.

    Explanation:

Joining a computer to an AD domain creates an account in the domain for the computer. This allows the computer to exist as a controllable, configurable, authenticated, individual in the domain. This means you can force policies about everything from desktop appearance to windows updates to anything configurable in windows to the client, and it can be changed relative to the user logged into the client as well.

The only user or group change that occurs when joining a computer to a domain is that the domain users' group is added to the local user's group and the domain admins group is added to the local admins group. Your local user accounts will be unaffected and there will be no conflict with the domain user with the same name.

Appreciate your patience and understanding and thank you for your time and cooperation.

    Sincerely,

    Waqas Muhammad
