Brand new product key says it has already been used. How do I resolve this?

I purchased Microsoft Office Home and Student 2021, installation failed. When I tried to reinstall was told that product key was already used. How do I resolve this?

Sorry for the inconvenience; when you recieve a message stating a product key has been used, it means it has been redeemed to an account.

Kindly sign into your Microsoft account services and subscription page to confirm if you have this Office Home & Student 2021 license in your account. Use link below:

https://account.microsoft.com/services

If you find this license, you can install from www.office.com and activate by signing into any Office app using the associated Microsoft account. See steps below:

  1. Go to www.office.com and if you're not already signed in, select Sign in.
  2. From the Office home page select Install Office.
  3. Select Install (or depending on your version, Install Office>).
  4. This completes the download of Office to your device. You can now proceed to install Office Home & Student 2021.
  5. Once you're done installing Office Home & Student 2021, you can then sign in your Microsoft account associated with this license to activate.

    I bought it from BestBuy online. I tried to install it but ran into some sort of issue and was not able to access it. Pasted below is the receipt.

    Hi Greatoutdoors! Based on the description, I understand that you got an error that the product key was already in use. Where did you purchase the product key for the Office? May I confirm if you had already used the product key on the PC before the failed installation?

    However, if you had used it before, here is the workaround:

    1. Completely uninstall the Office using the Microsoft Uninstall tools https://aka.ms/SaRA-officeUninstallFromPC: the tool from Microsoft will remove all remnants of any previous Office Installation: > Restart the PC
    2. Then reinstall Office Home and Student 2021
    3. After completing the installation, Log in to start activation.
