Hello,

I've created a custom template (*.dotx) file. I'd like to add my custom template to Microsoft word such that when I create a new document I have the option to select my template. Is this possible?

Word displays templates depending on what folder(s) you have selected for "Default personal templates location" at File | Options | Save and "User templates" at File | Options | Advanced: File locations. For more on this, see http://www.addbalance.com/usersguide/fileNew.htm#2013Changes

I recommend that you save your template to the User Templates folder and that you add the New Document or Template command (from the All Commands Category) to the Quick Access Toolbar and use that when you want to create a document from your template.

WHen you used that commant, it will display the "classic" New dialog

I've added my custom template files to the suggested directory ~\Documents\Custom Office Templates but, I do not see an option to select the templates that I've added. I've closed Microsoft Word and reopened - but no luck.

How does one USE a template? At the moment I'm awkwardly opening the template file itself and then having to "save as.." to avoid accidentally modifying the template.

No. But you can save it here> C:\Users\UserName\Documents\Custom Office Templates
