I am using MS Word 2016. I have tried to access the merge codes using Ctrl F9 but nothing happens. I am trying to use an IF.Then. Else as in:

{ IF «Married_Name» = " " «Last_Name» «Married_Name»} }

My results look like this:

Mary  {IF Smith = " " Jones Smith}}

    It would seem you are typing the field braces (i.e. { }). You can't do that. You need to create them via Ctrl-F9 (Cmd-F9 on a Mac) or, depending on your keyboard, Ctrl-Fn-F9.

    Ctrl+F9 is to create a new field, not for editing.

    Alt+F9 will toggle display of field codes.

    For some computers, you need to also add the Fn key.
