How do I create a TOC for each chapter in a book I'm writing?

I'm writing a family cookbook. The chapters are Appetizers, Breakfasts, Cookies, Desserts, etc. I would like to create a TOC at the beginning of each chapter that lists each recipe in the chapter TOC. Then I will create a TOC for the entire document. I was able to do this in an older version of Word, but cannot create this in my current version.

I'm using Word's Heading styles and I have not changed them.

Thank you.

    Hello MargaretDawn1,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Community.

To create TOC for each chapter of your Family Cook Book you will need to first create a bookmark for each chapter then add a field switch to the table of content so it only picks up headings that relate to them.

    1. Highlight the chapter you wish to create a TOC for.
    2. Click the INSERT Ribbon tab. In the Links group click the Bookmark button: enter a bookmark name, (the bookmark must start with a letter and contain no spaces or punctuation) and then click Add.
    3. Create a bookmark for each chapter.
    4. Place your cursor where you want the table of contents to appear (the beginning of the chapter). Next, open the Fields dialog – the button for this is on the Ribbon’s INSERT tab, in the Text group in the Quick Parts menu.
    5. Select TOC in the Field names list and then click the Field Codes button.
    6. Once you have clicked the Field Codes button an Options button appears next to it – click on this to open the Field Options dialog.
    7. Select the \b switch in the switches list. This switch “uses a bookmark to specify area of document from which to build table of contents” – as you can see in the switch description.
    8. Now click the Add to Field button.
    9. Click on OK to confirm and you are back in the Fields dialog. In the Advanced field properties add the name of your bookmark to the field code. So for my example the Field code reads TOC \b a
    10. There should always be a space between the bookmark name and field switch.
    11. Click OK to confirm and your table of contents will appear in your document – job done. You just repeat this for each table of contents you need to create.

It would appear that when you inserted the bookmark into the second chapter, you did not have all of the text in that chapter selected

This is how the bookmark symbols will look when the whole of the chapter is selected

If the selection was before the start of the chapter, with nothing more selected, it will look like

That was my mistake! I forgot I needed to select the content.

Thank you for your quick response!

I do need more help. I tried to follow your instructions exactly. And the first chapter TOC worked perfectly. However, Chapter 2 keeps giving me an error message, "No table of contents entries found." I followed your instructions again and received the same error message. The only thing I can see that's different is the bracket symbol before the first letter in the Heading of each following chapter.

The symbol on the first chapter which worked fine is a grey left hand bracket [ that is the size of the capital letter in the heading.

The symbol on the following chapters looks like a large, gray capital I which looks like an I-beam.

There are some chapters that do not have content yet, so I skipped them. Could that be causing my problem?

I would appreciate any help you can give me.

    Thank you,

    Margaret Dawn
