Office 365 activation urls for proxy server

Hi,

In my organization, we are currently utilizing Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2212 Build 16.0.15928.20196) 64-bit. My team and I have been working on creating a Trusted Research Environment that prohibits egress traffic for end users. However, during the preparation process, we encountered an issue with activating O365 applications. We would like to restrict our users to only have access to specific O365 applications, such as Word and Excel locally while prohibiting access to the Microsoft Office365 portal. Can you provide guidance on which URLs we should add to our proxy server to allow the activation only?

Regards

Michal Rosiek

    Hi Tin,

Thank you for your response. Restricting access and installation of individual Office 365 apps such as Excel and Word is not an issue for us. However, the problem we are facing is with application registration, as users are required to log in to activate these apps, and our environment prohibits egress traffic, thus there is no internet connection. We are seeking a list of necessary URLs and IP addresses that are required specifically for registration, so that we may allow only that traffic through our proxy server. For example:

    1. https://activation.sls.microsoft.com
    2. https://redir.metaservices.microsoft.com
    3. https://sls.microsoft.com
    4. https://go.microsoft.com
    5. https://aadg.windows.net
    6. https://login.microsoftonline.com
    7. https://login.live.com
    8. https://device.login.microsoftonline.com
    9. https://login.microsoft.com
    10. https://secure.aadcdn.microsoftonline-p.com

    Regards

    Michal

    Dear Mike Ros,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

Based on your description, we understand that you want to restrict users from using Office cloud apps, and you want to customize the installation of Office apps. If my understanding is correct, please refer to the following suggestions.

Prohibiting access to the Microsoft Office365 portal

It is difficult for us to prevent users from accessing Office portal sites, but we can control user access to Office app permissions, please refer to the following steps: Conditional Access - Block access - Azure Active Directory - Microsoft Entra | Microsoft Learn

Note Remove Office apps from the step so that users won't be able to use Office cloud apps:

Restrict our users to only have access to specific O365 applications, such as Word and Excel locally

ODT(Office Deployment Tool) is required to customize the installation of Office applications: Overview of the Office Deployment Tool - Deploy Office | Microsoft Learn

The ODT consists of two files: setup.exe and configuration.xml. To work with the tool, you edit the configuration file to define what options you want, and then run setup.exe from the command line.

You can continue to create the configuration file in a text editor, but we recommend using the Office Customization Tool instead. With the Office Customization Tool, you can easily create and modify configuration files in a web-based interface. For more information, see Overview of the Office Customization Tool.

    Hope this will help you.

    Sincerely,

    Tin | Microsoft Community Moderator
