I am trying to close one Office program and it insists on closing all of the same documents. For example, if I want to close Word document A, it requires that I close all Word documents that I have open. In the past, it would simply close the one I am requesting. Now I have to close all of my Word (excel...) in order to close one document.

Ctrl+F4 or Ctrl+W should close one document at a time. Some keyboards may require that you press Ctrl+Fn+F4.

    Hello,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

Per the description shared, I would like to summarize your concern i.e., when you try to close one Office program it will close all Office files that are opened.

If my understanding is correct, I would like to let you know that generally when you use individual Office apps such as Word, Excel, etc, and open multiple Word documents, closing one document will not close the other Word documents opened.

So, I would like to know the steps you are performing at your end to close one Word document please include the screenshot of each step, which will help us to better understand the situation and guide you in the right direction.

We look forward to your response. Thanks for your cooperation.

    Sincerely,

    Mia | Microsoft Community Moderator

What are you using to close it? If you use the X in the upper right corner, you will close the program, but you can use File | Close or Alt+F4 (Fn+Alt+F4 on some keyboards) to close the active document. What I always do, however, is add the Close File button to the Quick Access Toolbar (find it under All Commands at File | Options | Quick Access Toolbar):
