Microsoft word won't let me edit on Mac.

Hello I can't edit on my Mac and it says "View Only. Your account doesn't allow editing on a Mac. To learn more, contact your admin about your Office plan" I paid for my plan in full and my Mac version is 16.69.1. I found a thread that said the following:

Since you’ve already checked a license for the Office desktop applications, please try to do the following:

  1. Launch Word app installed on your Mac, click on the Word menu and choose Sign Out. Then quit the application.
  2. In the Finder, click on the Go menu and choose Go to Folder
  3. In the box, type: ~/Library
  4. Click on the Group Containers folder
  5. Locate the following three files/folders and drag them to the Trash
    • UBF8T346G9.ms
    • UBF8T346G9.Office
    • UBF8T346G9.OfficeOsfWebHost
  6. Empty the Trash and launch an Office application to check if you can now edit documents.

If the above steps didn't work, let’s try removing the Office license files following the steps in the article below and then activate Office apps with the valid account.

How to remove Office license files on a Mac (microsoft.com)

If this method didn’t fix the issue, please post back to us and provide the following information:

  1. What version of Office do you use? Please open Word, go to Word menu, and click About Word. Please update your Office apps if you use the previous version (Help > Check for Updates)
  2. Please provide us with the screenshot of Office 365 My account (office.com)
  3. Can you check if all Office applications have the similar problem?
  4. Please confirm if another Office users in your school tenant experienced this issue.
  5. Please send a screenshot of the error

When I try to go to the folder and search ~/Library nothing comes up. Please help!

    Dear respected Luke B Wagner,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

As per your description, first you no need to go to the folder and search ~/Library.

Since you post your question in Office 365 Education category, may I know are you using Office 365 Education subscription account?

If you have Office 365 work/school subscription and the assign license have “The latest desktop version of Office”. Then generally use How to remove license to use/run license removal tool to remove the license files on your Mac first. Then Restart Mac, open Office and use your work Office account now to sign in again with the account associated with your Office can fix the problem.

If you already tried to use/run license removal tool and it doesn't work on your Mac OS, then. in most cases the installation shall run successfully. Maybe the local settings had affected the application. Thus, we would like you to check whether the issue is related to your user profile. In this situation, we suggest you creating a new user profile on Mac on your Mac and see if any improvement. It is worth trying because it will help you narrow down whether the issue is caused by a specific corrupted user profile.
