Difference between business premium, E1, and nonprofit portal licenses?

My organization has been utilizing E1 licenses for years, but in October of 2021, the head of our organization signed us up for 25 nonprofit portal licenses, just before he resigned and moved out of state.

We have 7 out of 10 people using a Business Premium license

We have 10 out of 14 people using an E1 license (primarily used for general department and multi-user email addresses)

We have 0 out of 25 people assigned to use a NonProfit Portal license, because I don't know what it is!

I know how we are using the first two license types, but what is the NonProfit Portal License? I'm paying for it, but I don't know what it is. Does it grant us the same products and services as the premium license? Should I switch employees from one to another?

If anyone knows the difference and can help me out, I would love to know more. I have done some searching, and haven't found anything that really explains what the portal license does or how to make use of it. As far as I can tell, it is like the premium license except that it is entirely cloud based without the ability to download and use desktop apps. Is that correct?

Is this something I can share with volunteer leaders in our organization to connect them to staff via the cloud?

Any wisdom would be appreciated! Thanks.

    Dear John K79,

    Good day!

Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to assist you.

For your question #1: "Difference between business premium, E1, and nonprofit portal licenses?"

The difference between business premium, E1, and nonprofit portal licenses in eligible nonprofit organization is:

    • Microsoft 365 Business Premium: is an integrated solution that brings together the best-in-class productivity of Office 365 with simple device management and security to connect people and information in an intelligent new way. Eligible nonprofits can obtain a Microsoft 365 Business Premium grant for up to 10 seats for free, and then pay extra per additional user per month. This Business Premium allow you to download and use all product and services.
    • Office 365 E1 licenses: Microsoft grant Office 365 E1 licenses for eligible large nonprofit organizations. Microsoft previously provided Office 365 E1 as the primary cloud grant offer for eligible nonprofit organizations. But now provide Microsoft 365 Business Basic and Microsoft 365 Business Premium as our primary cloud grant offers and continue to provide grants of up to 2000 licenses of Office 365 E1 via an Enterprise Agreement. Therefore, Office 365 E1 includes enterprise-level, web-based apps like Excel and Outlook integrated with cloud services like OneDrive and Teams that enable productivity from anywhere. Microsoft 365 desktop apps not included.
    • NonProfit Portal License: is not a proper license, but it uses for accessing the nonprofit portal of Microsoft 365. When you are eligible for Microsoft 365 nonprofit plan, you will get this nonprofit portal licenses automatically and it allows you to ask for nonprofit pricing and credits in the nonprofit portal. Therefore, it doesn't allow you to use any services rather than accessing the nonprofit portal of Microsoft 365.

For your question #2: "Does it grant us the same products and services as the premium license?"

No, nonprofit portal license doesn't grant you any product and service. As I tried to mention above, it only allows you to access the nonprofit portal of Microsoft 365.

For your question #4: "Should I switch employees from one to another?

Yes, you can switch users from one to another.

For your question #5: "it is like the premium license except that it is entirely cloud based without the ability to download and use desktop apps. Is that correct?"

This is refer E1 license. For E1 licenses, you can only use web-based Microsoft 365 apps and business services, not desktop apps. However, since it's not a proper license, the nonprofit portal license doesn't grant either desktop apps or web-based Microsoft 365 apps and business services for assigned user.

For your question #6: "Is this something I can share with volunteer leaders in our organization to connect them to staff via the cloud?"

No, you cannot share with volunteers, and you can only assign your employees to allow access to the nonprofit portal.

We look forward to you update. I hope the above information will be helpful. Please feel free to let us know if there are any questions or if we've got you wrong. We will keep assisting you based on the information you provide. We sincerely appreciate your patience and cooperation.

    Dear John K79,

    Good day!

Many thanks for your kind response,

For your question #1 "Am I paying for the portal access or is it free?"

No, Non-profit portal is free to access, no need to associate any payment method and pay for the portal.

For the payment related issues, since Microsoft provide grants of up to 2000 licenses of Office 365 E1 through an Enterprise Agreement, payments and other related things depend on you and your partner (license resellers) agreement. Therefore, you can check your Office 365 E1 license agreement with your provider.

However, as an option, since Office 365 E1 and Microsoft Business Basic offer nearly the same service, and Microsoft offers Microsoft Business Basic as the primary cloud grant for free up to 300 users, you can switch licenses and use this offer for free. You can refer to Compare Microsoft 365 Nonprofit Plans | Microsoft 365

For your question #2 "Since I have 25 "portals" I'm assuming the NonProfit portal access is something I can assign to up to 25 people within our organization. Is that correct?"

Yes, you are definitely correct. but this non-profit portal allows your organization user to be familiar with non-profit service and get access to discounted and donated solutions offered. in addition, this portal license is granted for all non-profit eligible organizations whether they are large organization or small, so for large organization, allowing many users to access the portal gives them an advantage.

For your question #3 "where is the portal? How do I use it?"

You can assign one non-profit portal license to your account and sign into Nonprofit offers (microsoft.com) and check the portal content.

We look forward to you update. I hope the above information will be helpful. Please feel free to let us know if there are any questions or if we've got you wrong. We will keep assisting you based on the information you provide. We sincerely appreciate your patience and cooperation.

    Stay safe and healthy.

Thank you. I believe that answers my questions regarding the premium license and the E1 licenses, but I'm still a bit confused about the nonprofit portal. Am I paying for the portal access or is it free? Since I have 25 "portals" I'm assuming the NonProfit portal access is something I can assign to up to 25 people within our organization. Is that correct? Since we haven't taken advantage of it, I'm just confused about why it exists and why more than one person in the organization would need a portal. It sounds like something only an admin would need.

Also, where is the portal? How do I use it?
