Adding a domain to Microsoft 365 while leaving the email hosted elsewhere.

I am in the process of migrating some domains from Rackspace to Microsoft 365. My organization has several domains within our Microsoft 365. I am attempting to add the domain to Microsoft so I can build users and groups prior to the migration. The issue I am having is after I verify the dns via TXT record any emails from our Microsoft domains come back as undeliverable. Is it possible to add the domain to Microsoft and still allow emails to go through to Rackspace?

    Hello Craig Hendrix,

    Good day!

Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

Based on your description you want to know if it is possible to add your custom domain to Microsoft 365 and still allow emails to go through to another provider.

Yes, it is possible to add your custom domain to Microsoft 365 and still allow emails to go through to another provider. You can configure your DNS settings to point to your email hosting provider*.* This way, emails sent to your custom domain will be routed to your email hosting provider instead of Microsoft 365.

Please feel free to let us know if there are any questions or if we've got you wrong. We will keep assisting you based on the information you provide. We sincerely appreciate your patience and cooperation.

    A little update

I can add the domain and verify it. When I go to choose "Set up my serivces for me" it will query and get the correct records, however it is prompting me to change my ns servers which I can't do due to having things hosted there. I've tried all three options for connecting the domain and that was the only one where it would allow me to add custom dns records. The problem is the ns record error is keeping the health check from running. Is there a way to just manually add the records I want without it recommending the ns records?
