I need help to choose Picture format to paste Excel Chart with text legibility, maximum PowerPoint App reliability.

My reasoning to choose EMF as follows:

  1. default paste options (SVG or Microsoft Office Graphic Object) causing PowePoint to close pre-maturely
  2. retains Text attributes
  3. No reported problem with Bar Graph
  4. when original color is not required
  5. when transparency is not required

My concern of EMF is Chart Shape may change; how to find out how much change to expect?

  3. Picture (Enhanced Metafile)
  4. Picture (JPEG)
  5. Picture (GIF)
  6. Picture Windows Metafile)
  7. Device Independent Bitmap
  8. Bitmap

when copied from Slide, extra option is "Microsoft Office Graphic Object "

SVG vs PNG vs JPG: Image Format Pros & Cons

SVGs are more like HTML than simply being an image. As a result, we recommend that web developers not load any SVG as an object or iframe if possible

JPEG is a file that can get infected

FAQ: Which image format is best?

Display the properties of an embedded image in PowerPoint

to quote from What's the difference between Microsoft Excel Chart Object and Microsoft Office Graphic Object?

Excel chart objects will retain their Excel characteristics and when they are embedded into Word and then edited, Excel will be the editor.

Graphic objects can be edited with the chart tools that come with Word.

Here is a quote from the article "Copy Excel data or Charts to Word"

  • To paste a chart in another format, click the arrow on the Paste button, and then click Paste Special. In the Aslist, select the format that you want to use.
  • To paste a chart as an embedded object that can be edited by using Excel, click Microsoft Office Excel Chart Object. To insert a file icon that you can click to open the chart, you can select Display as icon.
  • To paste the chart as an Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) Word application icon (rather than pasting the actual chart), click Microsoft Office Excel Chart Object, and then select the Display as icon check box. You can click the icon to open the application and then view the chart.
  • To paste a chart as a static picture, click any Picture or Bitmap option. Picture format generally provides better display quality than Bitmap format.
  • Click Microsoft Office Graphic Object to paste a chart as a graphic object that can be edited by using the chart tools in Word. To insert a file icon that you can click to open the chart, select Display as icon. Microsoft Office Graphic Object is not available when you are using Compatibility Mode in Word.

The information you quoted doesn't mean that the appearance of the chart will change just because it's been pasted as EMF. It means that someone can later ungroup the pasted EMF and make changes to it. This is the case with any vector graphic (EMF, WMF, SVG). Raster or image formats cannot be ungrouped and can't be edited (BMP, PNG, JPG, etc)
