Stop Word from automatically updating the 'Date modified'

I turned off Autosave in Word options. But when I open an old file just to view it (without editing) Word automatically updates the 'Date modified' to the current date/time, and the updated date/time remains after closing the unmodified file. How do I stop this from happening?

You create a copy of your document, in Windows and open that one.

Delete it after you close it.

I know this is not what you want to hear.

Note, this is not the place to get any changes made in Word nor the attention of developers at Microsoft. This is an independent user-to-user support forum. MS does not see anything you post here. The way to get their attention is through the feedback mechanisms.

My personal preference is to use the Word Feedback Portal. If you do, please get a share link and post it here so that others seeing this thread can go there and vote and comment. While you are there, check for other posts and feel free to vote and comment on those as well!

Thank you, Charles. I am new to Windows 11 and MS 365. Some nice new features, but definitely others where the programmers should pay attention to the old saying 'If it's not broke, don't fix it' (and certainly don't create new problems in the process). I will provide my feedback through the Word Feeback Portal, as you suggested--I hope MS pays attention to the feedback.
