Dictation produces repetitive texts - "bye bye" and "oh"

I have used MS Word dictation for 3 years now. For the last few months there has been a sudden change. While I dictate it automatically populates erroneous words of " bye bye" or "oh" if I am taking a pause while dictation is on. I have tried doing it from my online MS 365 and do not see the same issue. I have tried on my second computer, and do not see the issue. The issue is on my imac with Big Sur desktop version.

The other issues are while I am dictating it will not do 'undo' or respond to Command+z once the erroneous words are produced. Say, " bye bye" was produced into my document, I then will hit Command+z or undo, then the text gets stuck going from grey text to black. I turn dictation off to fix it manually but now I cannot use command z for anything in that document anymore. Its like all history of my writing is gone. I then manually delete the erroneous words and keep going. The next set of steps I am able to use undo command until the erroneous words populate again.

Sometimes the text I typed will disappear after the erroneous words are produced and I cannot bring that text back because undo or redo of the elimination of the text will not work. All history of my steps are gone. I lose my work a lot more by using dictate now.

How can I fix this issue? I tried uninstalling and restalling the software and it has not fixed the problem.

I solved my issue which was due to windows using my web cam as my microphone instead of my headset. Once I switched the microphone to my head set device, the "Oh" and "Bye" never came back. My Web came is set back pretty far so it must have been picking up background noise or hum form somewhere,

I have the same issue ... since Feb 2023 , it seems the dictate function in MSWORD keeps adding the word "bye" or "bye bye" then deletes previous text evne though there is no sound form my headset.

    Dictate is really unusable now...

I have the same problem on my PC, but the word that appears randomly is "open". Because this often results in the deletion of the undo list, I either have to remember to save my work more frequently or manually turn off dictate if i need to stop and think about what to type next. I also have to manually search for extraneous instances of "open" before I send any documents out.

It's getting to the stage where it would be better to dictate text in another app, then paste it into Word.

I am having the exact same issues as David. The software is up to date and this problem is really frustrating. What is Microsoft doing to resolve this situation?

    Dear Lincy45,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you

Please check whether your Office applications have been up to date with the latest version. You can reference this article:Update Office for Mac automatically - Office Support (microsoft.com).

If the problem persists, please try running Office by starting up your Mac in safe mode to see the result. This can help us check whether issues you are experiencing are caused by software that loads as your Mac starts up.

Disclaimer: Microsoft provides no assurances and/or warranties, implied or otherwise, and is not responsible for the information you receive from the third-party linked sites or any support related to technology.

Another suggestion is to remove the Office folders to desktop:

    • Completely quit all Office apps
    • In Finder, press COMMAND +Shift+g.
    • Enter ~/Library and click Go.
    • Go to Containers folder, find the folder called Microsoft.Word
    • Move this folder to your desktop by cut & paste.
    • Relaunch Word for Mac application and see the results

If you still experience this situation, please inform us of the following information:

    • The version information of Word you are using.
    • Whether this phenomenon occurs in all documents?

    Sincerely,

    Tin | Microsoft Community Moderator
