Photos app will not play video audio if files stored on OneDrive (Business). Why?

Hoping there I can gain some insight into my issue with audio and Photos.

Situation and Problem:

  • Photos app is linked to a OneDrive (Business) account.
  • Files are not stored locally due to save disk space.
  • All photos and videos appear in the thumbnails (check!).
  • Videos can 'play' but there is no audio. (problem)
  • If video is stored locally, there is audio.

Environment:

  • Windows 11 Home (North America) - up to date.
  • Photos (not the Legacy version) - up to date
  • OneDrive for Business (this is important difference from Personal)

Investigations so far:

  • codecs? (specifically a Web package) [not successful]

Any insights would be greatly appreciated,. Thank you in advance,

J

    Hi Sophia,

Thank you for the response and assistance. I can confirm a few of your questions and a few more...

The files play as expected (has audio) when viewed online in the browser (any browser).

This is when the files are in OneDrive for Business.

The files do not play properly even when locally stored if played through Photos App.

Files play properly when stored locally and played using Media Player (Version 11.2301.27.0)

So I dont think its an issue related to OneDrive for Business.

It appears the Windows 11 Photo app does not have all the audio codec required. At least thats my interpretation at this point.

    i Jamie,

Thanks for posting this inquiry on our community. I am very glad to help you on it.

I did some tests on my side. It is fine to hear the audio when playing video in OneDrive for Business. However, it will be muted by default when you just opened the video file. Could you please confirm if issue still happens when you unmute the video? If you have unmuted the video, to better understand your situation, could you also provide the information below?

    1. May I know if the same problem occurs when uploading to personal OneDrive?

2, May I know if the same problem occurs when changing another browser?

    Best Regards,
