Microsoft 365 for nonprofits licensing question.

Hello. I represent a large US nonprofit who has for years now received donations of Microsoft 365 E1 and E2 licenses free of charge. We presently have 1,050 E2 licenses and 733 E1 licenses assigned.

Today I received an email stating that E2 was being discontinued for use by nonprofits, and that I could transfer my users to E1 licenses which cost $2.50USD per license per month. We have paid nothing for any of our licenses to date, and this cost associated with E1 has never been communicated to us in the past at any time.

What has changed, when did it change, and what does this mean for my nonprofit? We provide search and rescue and disaster relief and operate on an extremely tight budget, and the constantly conflicting, contradictory, and nebulous nature of information related to nonprofits coming from Microsoft makes it nearly impossible to plan anything long term. We have leveraged the MS365 platform to enormous success, aiding in genuine human lives saved. The tools and capabilities this platform provides have become critical to our daily operations, and we desperately need clear, concise guidance from Microsoft.

Thanks in advance.

    Dear Capt Michael Ramsay,

Good day! Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Community. We are glad to assist you.

What has changed, when did it change?

On April 3, 2023, Tech for Social Impact, part of Microsoft Philanthropies, has announced the final discontinuation of the legacy Office 365 E2 grant offer that was provided through the Web Direct channel. Effective October 1, 2023, customers will no longer be able to renew the legacy Office 365 E2 grant offer. This legacy plan was discontinued by Microsoft in 2013 and will no longer be supported. The discontinuation of Office 365 E2 won’t affect any plans currently available in our nonprofit offer catalog, including 10 granted licenses of Microsoft 365 Business Premium, 300 granted licenses of Microsoft 365 Business Basic, and up to 2000 granted licenses of Office 365 E1 via Enterprise Agreement.

What does this mean for my nonprofit?

Please don't worry, we’ll continue to provide discounts to nonprofits of up to 75 percent on many Microsoft 365 products. At the next renewal on or after October 1, 2023, customers subscribed to this legacy offer will renew into the Office 365 E1 plan up to 2000 granted through an Enterprise Agreement . Alternatively, customers can transition up to 300 of their users from the legacy Office 365 E2 nonprofit grant to the Microsoft 365 Business Basic nonprofit grant, which you can refer to Change Microsoft 365 for business plans manually | Microsoft Learn

Just reaching out to see if anyone has additional information on this process or suggestions. Do we know if the upgrade is seamless as far as current tenant,, domain, and such.

    Thank you.

Hello, I would like further clarity as well. I have many Office 365 E2 nonprofit licenses. These will continue to be free and will automatically be converted, correct?

Just to make sure I understand correctly. We have 800 Office 365 E2 nonprofit licenses, and these will automatically convert to Office 365 E1, for free? In October?

    Thanks,
    Mark

UPDATE: I have been instructed to contact MS partners who can apply a grant to our account. It's been a struggle, but that seems to be the only route.
