I'm using a custom .DOTX and in the DOTX I'd like to modify the Footnote Reference Number style to have the following format:

  • Arial font (the default in my custom .DOTX).
  • Size 16 (not the default size in my custom .DOTX).
  • The reference number to appear as a Bold, white number on a red background.

    Hello AirForce9797,

Thanks for contacting us, I can help you change the formatting of the footnote reference numbers in Word 2019. To do this, you need to modify the Footnote Reference style that applies to all the footnote numbers in your document. Here are the steps:

-Select just one footnote number, either in the text or in the footnote area. -Press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S to open the Styles pane on the right side of your screen. -Scroll down the list of styles until you find Footnote Reference. It should have a blue box around it indicating that it is applied to your selection. -Right-click on Footnote Reference and choose Modify from the menu. This will open a dialog box where you can change various aspects of the style. -In the Modify Style dialog box, click on Format at the bottom left corner and choose Font from the drop-down menu. This will open another dialog box where you can change the font type, size, color and effects of your footnote reference numbers. -To change your font type to Arial, select Arial from the Font list. To change your font size to 16, enter 16 in the Size box or use the up and down arrows. To make your reference numbers bold, check Bold under Font style. To change your font color to white, click on Color and choose White from Theme Colors or Standard Colors. To add a red background color behind your reference numbers, click on Shading and choose Red from Theme Colors or Standard Colors3. Click OK to close each dialog box and save your changes. -You should see that all your footnote reference numbers have changed according to your preferences. If you want to undo any changes, press Ctrl+Z or go to File > Undo.

I hope this helps you format your footnotes as you like.

    Regards, Ajibola.

There is a style: Footnote Reference.

    Modify it.

Note that the same style is used for the numbers in the body of the document and before the footnotes at the bottom.

Sorry, I made a mess of this request. I just did the following:

    1. I opened C:\Users{USER NAME}\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\Normal.dotm.
    2. Entered TT.
    3. Created a Footnote. The Footnote Reference was formatted as Arial, 12, Not Bold, Black background.

I can manually change it to Bold and a Red background. Is there away to save the changes to the DOTM?

You should not need to Open the Normal template for this change.

Doing so can mess things up.

Here is what I said before:

In the Modify Style dialog, there is a button for new documents based on this template. Click on that. It will modify the normal.dotm file assuming that this is the base for your current document.

If the document was based on a custom .dotx template, the same button will store your new style in that template.

    References:

This will change it in new documents. If you need to change existing documents, please write back.

If, when you close Word, you are asked if you want to save changes to the template, click on "Yes."

Yes, you can modify the Footnote Reference style in the Normal.dotm template and save the changes so that they will be applied to all new documents that you create based on that template. Here are the steps to do so:

    1. Open Microsoft Word and create a new document.
    2. Click on the "Home" tab in the ribbon.
    3. In the "Styles" group, click on the small arrow in the bottom right corner to open the "Styles" pane.
    4. In the "Styles" pane, click on the "Footnote Reference" style to select it.
    5. Right-click on the "Footnote Reference" style and select "Modify" from the context menu.
    6. In the "Modify Style" dialog box, select the "Format" button at the bottom left corner and select "Numbering" from the drop-down list.
    7. In the "Numbering" dialog box, select the "Font" button and set the font to "Arial", the size to "16", and the font color to "White".
    8. Select the "OK" button to apply the changes.
    9. In the "Modify Style" dialog box, select the "Format" button again and choose "Borders and Shading" from the drop-down list.
    10. In the "Borders and Shading" dialog box, select the "Shading" tab and choose "Red" as the fill color.
    11. Click on "OK" to apply the changes and close the "Modify Style" dialog box.
    12. Save the changes to the Normal.dotm template by clicking on the "File" tab in the ribbon and selecting "Save As".
    13. In the "Save As" dialog box, navigate to the folder where the Normal.dotm template is stored (C:\Users{USER NAME}\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates).
    14. In the "File name" field, type "Normal.dotm" and click on "Save" to overwrite the existing template.

Now, all new documents that you create based on the Normal.dotm template will have the modified Footnote Reference style with the new formatting.

If you have any other questions or need assistance with anything, please don't hesitate to let me know. It will be my pleasure to Assist you.

    Best Regards, Sneha
