RECORD MACRO now does not work in Microsoft 365 Word.

Why can't I record macros anymore in Word? I have been doing that for 40-plus years, and now with Microsoft 365 Word and its updates, I cannot do it anymore. I am not the only one. Everyone in my industry group is complaining about it. We need our macros for our job.

I can verify that macros are no longer working. I cannot record, and all my macros have disappeared!

It also has nothing to do with security settings. I selected "Enable all macros" and I still cannot record macros, and I still don't have the many macros I already created. They suddenly disappeared!

It also seems like Microsoft is changing Visual Basic because the editor looks completely different.

I also cannot create macros in the Visual Basic editor!

I used to be able to go the VIEW tab and then clic MACROS. I would then click the RECORD MACRO in the dropdown. A screen appears. I used to type the macro name in MACRO NAME. Then I would click KEYBOARD. When this happens, a popup appears that says "The macro could not be created." I have tried to to to Options, then Trust Center, to make sure I had the "Enable all macros" button selected, which I did. Still, I cannot create a macro.

I am not the only one. We are transcriptionist and use macros for SPEAKER IDs so that we don't have to type the person's name over and over again in colloquy.

I found a remedy. Well, actually, somebody else did for me. My Normal.dotm was corrupted. I deleted it. When you start up Word again, a brand-new one is automatically created, but the best part, I can make macros again. Yay!

If you are using macros to record and replay snippets of text, you are using the wrong tool. You want AutoText or AutoCorrect instead.

Uhm, recording macros still works fine here in Microsoft 365 and Office 2021.

What problem are you having, specifically? Tell us what is happening when you try to record a macro.

    • Which steps are you taking to record the macro?
    • What is happening instead? Any error message?
