adding an X within a checkbox

I would now like to add an X within a checkbox, and presume I can't infer doing this from knowing the procedure (the pattern, the key combination, the keystrokes) for adding a checkmark within a checkbox.

Can someone say how I can add an X within a checkbox in Microsoft Word 2010?

Thanks to the article at https://www.askwoody.com/newsletter/getting-started-with-winget/#public-defender that I just got around to reading, I noticed that there's another way to get an empty box to change to a box with an X in it.

Type the letter o and apply the Wingdings font to it. The result is an empty box:

Select the box character and type the letter x, replacing the o. The result is

The boxes are not quite the same size, but it's barely noticeable.

Select the x and type the letter o to return to an empty box.

You certainly can infer the answer from the previous discussion. Instead of using the check box with check mark (Unicode 2611) to replace the empty box (Unicode 2610), do the replacement with the box with an X (Unicode 2612), all of them in Segoe UI Symbol font.

As before, and as Charles suggested, this will be much easier to prepare and use if you replace all the boxes with check box content controls, available in all Word versions from 2010 to the current versions.

    You need a clickable checkbox.

You can find one on the Developer Tab.

Whoever designed Wingdings that way was thinking ahead!

I was able to insert the X symbol with no problem. I don't believe I will use it a lot, but I will use it.

    Thank you!
