Microsoft Word - Style Pane [Quick Styles Gallery] looks different with Styles just having the name but no sample text above the style.

How do I get the default style pane view which has the Style name and above it some sample text showing the style.

    1. In the Styles Pane, click on the options button (usually represented by a gear or settings icon) at the top-right corner of the pane.
    2. In the options menu, make sure the "Style Preview" or "Preview" option is checked or enabled. This option enables the sample text display above the style names.

These two steps are incorrect for desktop Word from Microsoft 365. The "Show Preview" check box at the bottom of the Styles Pane controls the sample text display.

In my reply here, I am going to assume that you are referring to the Style gallery on the Home tab. The Styles pane is different (in Word for Windows, you can display the pane by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S).

I believe this is part of the so-called visual refresh. Click the Upcoming features. Try it now icon Image on the title bar and then disable the "Visual Refresh Preview" option in the Coming Soon pane.

For future reference, you may want to look at my article:

New Experience/Visual Refresh Preview - Microsoft Office / Offic e 365 - Turning it On and Off

I, too, hate what it has done to the [Quick] Styles Gallery on the Home tab. Among other things, fewer styles fit.

By the way, the "Styles Pane" is a different feature than the [Quick] Styles Gallery. If you were not aware of it, you may want to check it out, it can be very useful.

Thanks for the response! I will definitely check the articles.

    Hi,

I'm Tim, an Independent Consultant here and a Microsoft user like you. I don't work for Microsoft and do not have access to any of your data on their system.

If the Style Pane in Microsoft Word is displaying only the style names without the sample text above them, it is likely that the style preview option is disabled. You can enable it by following these steps below:-

    1. Open Microsoft Word and go to the "Home" tab on the ribbon.
    2. Locate the "Styles" group on the ribbon and click on the small arrow icon in the bottom right corner of the Styles group. This will open the Styles Pane.
    3. In the Styles Pane, click on the options button (usually represented by a gear or settings icon) at the top-right corner of the pane.
    4. In the options menu, make sure the "Style Preview" or "Preview" option is checked or enabled. This option enables the sample text display above the style names.
    5. If the option was already enabled, try disabling it and then re-enabling it to see if it refreshes the style preview.

Once the style preview option is enabled, you should see the style names along with the sample text displayed above each style in the Style Pane.

I hope this information helps. If you have any questions, please let me know and I'll be glad to assist you further or If you find it helpful, you can mark this comment as the answer.
