Hi Mike
A Btconnect com email will not work on Thunderbird , Microsoft just does not allow it, you have to use Outlook. I have decided to get a new email address gmail.com and wind down Btconnect.
I went to my local IT specialist and he said he had business customers with the same issue. It's poor customer service from both BT and Microsoft

Hello Alan and anyone else baffled/annoyed at BT's action.
Have a search for OWL for Exchange which is an add-on for Thunderbird. I went to https://www.beonex.com/owl/ to solve this knotty problem for my wife's BTConnect address which she has had for many years, and did not want to have to give up, and accessed via Thunderbird. I used the 30 day free period to test it and ended up happily paying the (2 coffees) annual cost to keep it live. So far no problems other than some slowness with deletes and spams which may be due to my Plusnet (ie BT Broadband) service of course.
For my own BTConnect account I have used a an auto-responder & forwarding solution for some years as I do not like POP which effectively means I am "leaving" it slowly as contacts become aware of the replacement address.
My direct Outlook.com address (not this BTConnect one) happily carries on with an IMAP connexion whether T'bird or any other email client I use (mainly Spark as its multi-platform). Baffling!
(Not sure if it's MS or BT as Admin who set the access parameters for BTConnect. Also found a quite interesting article at Stamford University here - https://confluence.slac.stanford.edu/display/SCSPub/Thunderbird+and+Owl+Email+Configuration )
