Setting up Thunderbird email with my BTConnect.com email using Microsoft 365 Servers.

I am trying to use Thunderbird email with my BTConnect.com email which has just been transferred from POP to IMAP using Microsoft 365 Servers. Email works using MIcrosoft Outlook, but I do not like Outlook and would prefer to use Thunderbird . I have the latest version of Thunderbird and my Incoming settings are Server: outlook.office365.com, Port 993, SSL/TSL enabled and authentication OAuth2. The outgoing SMTP settings are : Server smtp.office365.com, Port 587, startTLS and OAuth2. I get the message There are no Messages on the Server when trying to Get Messages. When sending a message I get an error "UNable to Authenticate to SMTP Server. I have checked that my passwords are all correct. Is there a problem with using Thunderbird with Office 365 or should I use different settings. Any help welcome, thanks Alan

    Hi Mike

A Btconnect com email will not work on Thunderbird , Microsoft just does not allow it, you have to use Outlook. I have decided to get a new email address gmail.com and wind down Btconnect.

I went to my local IT specialist and he said he had business customers with the same issue. It's poor customer service from both BT and Microsoft

    Regards

    Alan

Hello Alan and anyone else baffled/annoyed at BT's action.

Have a search for OWL for Exchange which is an add-on for Thunderbird. I went to https://www.beonex.com/owl/ to solve this knotty problem for my wife's BTConnect address which she has had for many years, and did not want to have to give up, and accessed via Thunderbird. I used the 30 day free period to test it and ended up happily paying the (2 coffees) annual cost to keep it live. So far no problems other than some slowness with deletes and spams which may be due to my Plusnet (ie BT Broadband) service of course.

For my own BTConnect account I have used a an auto-responder & forwarding solution for some years as I do not like POP which effectively means I am "leaving" it slowly as contacts become aware of the replacement address.

My direct Outlook.com address (not this BTConnect one) happily carries on with an IMAP connexion whether T'bird or any other email client I use (mainly Spark as its multi-platform). Baffling!

(Not sure if it's MS or BT as Admin who set the access parameters for BTConnect. Also found a quite interesting article at Stamford University here - https://confluence.slac.stanford.edu/display/SCSPub/Thunderbird+and+Owl+Email+Configuration )

    Regards,

    Barry

Since you’ve already updated to the latest version of Thunderbird and read the article from January, you could try reaching out to Thunderbird support for further assistance

Unfortunately, I don't have any further troubleshooting to offer.

There are many knowledgeable users active on the forum and I hope that someone else can offer further insight into your issue.

    Thanks

Hi Alan I'm AnnaThomas and I'd happily help you with your question. In this Forum, we are Microsoft consumers just like yourself. It seems that there have been some changes to how Thunderbird handles OAuth2 authorization with Microsoft accounts. This may involve some extra work for users currently using Microsoft-hosted accounts through their employer or educational institution. Have you tried updating to the latest version of Thunderbird and re-authenticating your account?
