Invited 365 family member, he can't successfully accept, I can't either on my laptop

I tried to invite a friend to my 365 Family account. He got the invitation and as I understand it got into a circular login loop.

I checked the status of the invite and it still shows as “pending members, … invite expires in 14 days”

So, I tried (with him present) to accept his invite on my machine and then I experienced:

  1. It needed to log off the active account – his email; yet I do not believe a password has been created for his Office account.
  2. Get signon screen, it shows “we found an account you can use here” which is his account.
  3. Clicked on that and got signin with “Because you're accessing sensitive info, we'll send a code to __@gmail.com to verify your identity” – click on send code
  4. Went to his gmail account for the “single use code” and entered it
  5. Then it goes back to step 2 to sign in. …. Over and over again

Objective is for him to use the Office apps on the web.

When I bring up Edge and click on OneDrive I get an empty folder and the upper right shows his email address. Note, never logged onto OneDrive/Office with a password.

When I use Edge to access Microsoft 365 I get the upper right showing his email and the screen with the left nav of all the office apps. I click on Document (word) I get “unable to create new documents. We’re unable to create a new document at this time. Please try again later. If I click on OneDrive two folders show up (didn’t exist above) DOCUMENTS and PICTURES. Both empty.

The folders I set as shared on MY OneDrive do not show.

My guess is that the family account still isn’t established. Yet, all the steps above accomplished nothing.

If I click on the GG (his initials) in the upper right and select My Profile I am taken back to the Sign in.

Totally confused.

Thank you.

ADDING NEW INFORMATION:

  1. Just noticed that the above support message was logged under a separate microsoft account (of a company I advise) - BUT, the Edge Window I created the support message was one I logged on under my personal email and confirmed by Authenticator so I have NO IDEA why it was logged on under the other email address. The upper right of that window showed my personal email.

Before continuing with this, I would like to confirm where the focus is in all of this since it would serve no purpose to keep moving from one to the other

    a) - Using Word online or b) - The Word desktop app

For the rest of this response, m oy going to focus on the Word desktop app and have to say I am not a Mac user so can only provide info as applicable to the Windows environment. Any quetions specific to the Mac environment for the desktop apps need to be posed in the applicable catgory focused on Mac.

    With that said......

    #1 - <Save> vs <Save As>

If a document is opened from folder being sync's by OneDrive - the <Save> option would not be enabled.

#2 - As to what appears for OneDrive in Word, is the OneDrivee account connected as shown in the screenshot. If not, that needs to be resolved. Like I said, I can't speak to what Word looks like on a Mac but in Windows it should appear similar to what is shown

From within Word - go to "File" and then either "Account" or "Open"

    Thank you.

    Now have successfully have:

    1. His Microsoft account created
    2. Logged onto office.com (Microsoft 365)
    3. OneDrive shows:
      1. A couple test files created with WORD
      2. Finally found the folders I shared with him, they are under left nav “Shared”

    However, discovered:

    1. Open in WORD does not show folders I shared where files he would like to open and edit existing files.
    2. Save a WORD files does not show shared folders to save there
    3. Cannot move files/folders to the Shared folders

I checked Sharing permissions for him: Can edit. However, as shown below, Save (with changes) is not an option so editing does seem to work.

To open a shared Word file:

    1. Requires going to OneDrive, clicking Shared, finding/clicking on the file
    2. Word in browser loads
    3. When trying to save changes, only given following options:
      1. Save is not an option
      2. Save as – so the original file title is kept but can’t save in the Shared folder
      3. Rename
      4. Download a copy, as PDF or as ODT

Net, it appears the sharing function ONLY permits opening and viewing. No updates to the shared folder, no moving files from the initialized Documents and Pictures folders or anywhere else to the Share folders.

Have I missed something or miss understand what Sharing permits? I search the web for details but could not find much.

    Thanks, Mike

    PS. Progress being made ;)

Given everything that has gone on to date which I have to admit is a little hard to follow what I would suggest is

Send a new <share> invite to the Microsoft Account that is used to get access to the online apps

Am also a little confused with the focus on activating the Family share when the original post stated

Objective is for him to use the Office apps on the web.

One has nothing to do with the other. As for OneDrive, would do the same thing in terms of sending the Share info once everything is cleared up with the Microsoft Account "

Well, I went to his place, used his Mac and using Google Chrome:

    1. Discovered that the Microsoft account for him did not include a password, eventually got that addressed
    2. Was able to bring up the Office apps on the browser and open a blank WORD document - couldn't do that before the password was set.
    3. Then found the Family invite email and clicked the link to activate (can't remember the wording)
    4. Another screen came up, believe from the Family.Microsfot.com site (greenish background)
    5. Clicked on the button to activate and got the following message, tried 5 minutes and 1 hour later, no change, same message.

    Sorry, something went wrong.

We’re not sure what happened, but refreshing the page may help, or trying again in a little while.

    TraceId: nqx7Dg+uR0avcHoL.36.109

    Where we currently are:

    1. There is a working Microsoft account and can get the Office apps screen, open a new WORD doc, see a starter OneDrive folder
    2. Cannot see the OneDrive folders I shared with the same email address.
    3. MY family.microsoft.com screen shows that the family membership I shared has not be accepted as yet.

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Hello Michael V

Hi, I'm Karl and will be happy to help you today.

Before anything else, in regard to

Objective is for him to use the Office apps on the web.

The only thing that is required to use the Office apps on the web is a valid Microsoft Account. Those apps are free to use by anyone - no subscription is required

Create, share, and collaborate for free with Office on the web https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/free-office-online-for-the-web

For the rest, have to admit, the description isn't the easiest to follow so in an effort to bring this back to basics

#1 - Does this person actually have a Microsoft Account that he can log into

    https://login.live.com/

*** to keep this clean, would suggest using a private browser session on his machine to test this. If things work properly but not when using a normal browser session, the browser cahce / cookies need to be cleared

#2 - If #1 works, it just a matter of sending the invite to him to that email address so the subscription can ve accepted by that Microsoft Account 0 as described in

Share your Microsoft 365 Family subscription https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/share-your-microsoft-365-family-subscription-b389b9ce-3ae3-4a82-9017-39d79972fcba

As a FYI, a single browser session can ony be logged into one Microsoft Account at a time
