Hi there,

I have selected the header row to repeat in Word table properties, and it was repeating across pages for a while, but for some reason it is no longer repeating on each page. I have googled and tried so many things to fix this. There is no break between tables, and I am viewing in print view. Please help - thank you

    Hi Stefan,

Natasha did send me a document with which there were two issues:

The second row was set so that it did not break across a page and was of a size that completely filled the page, with the no break option apparently over-ruling the Repeat Header Rows setting.

When that row was set to allow it to be broken across a page, the Header Row repeated up to the point at which there was a Hard Page Break, which meant that the table on the following pages was a separate table.

    Hello Natasha K,

I’m Ajibola, an Independent Advisor and Microsoft user like you. Thanks for posting the query here in this forum.

If the header row in your Word table was previously set to repeat across pages but is no longer repeating, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

    1. Check table settings: Right-click on the table and select "Table Properties" from the context menu. In the "Table Properties" dialogue box, go to the "Row" tab. Make sure the "Repeat as header row at the top of each page" option is still selected.
    2. Table positioning: Ensure that the table is not positioned within a text box or a floating object that might prevent the header row from repeating. Select the table and use the arrow keys to move it around and see if the header row reappears.
    3. View settings: Confirm that you are in the correct view mode. Switch to the "Print Layout" view to ensure that you are viewing the document as it would appear when printed. You can change the view mode by going to the "View" tab in the Word ribbon and selecting "Print Layout" or "Normal" view.
    4. Section breaks: Check for any section breaks within the document that might be interfering with the table's formatting. Section breaks can be inserted unintentionally and affect the table's behaviour. Go to the "Layout" tab in the Word ribbon and click on "Breaks" to inspect and remove any unnecessary section breaks.
    5. Clear manual formatting: If you have manually formatted the table or cells, it may interfere with the repeat header functionality. Select the entire table, right-click, and choose "Clear Formatting" or press "Ctrl+Spacebar" to remove any manual formatting applied to the table or cells.
    6. Update table styles: If you have modified the table style or applied a custom table formatting, it's possible that the changes affected the header row behaviour. Try applying a built-in table style or resetting the table formatting to its default settings.

By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot and fix the issue with the header row not repeating in your Word table.

Hope this helps you to further troubleshoot this issue.

    Kind Regards. Ajibola,

If you provided us with a sample document to look at, it would be easier to diagnose the issue.

You can upload your sample to OneDrive or Dropbox and then post a share link in this thread.

    Hello Natasha K,

I’m Segunfunmi, an Independent Advisor and Microsoft user like you. Thanks for posting the query here in this forum.

To repeat a table header row in Word 365, you need to right-click in the row that you want to repeat, click Table Properties, and in the Table Properties dialogue box, on the Row tab, select the Repeat as header row at the top of each page check box. Then select OK. Note that repeated table headers are visible only in the Print Layout view or when you print the document.

If you’re still having trouble, there could be a few reasons why the header row is not repeated. Any break in the table will prevent the header row from repeating. Make sure that the table is not wrapped (on the Table tab of Table Properties, text wrapping should be set to None) and that the only row(s) marked as a header row(s) is/are at the top of the table and consecutive. Also, if you’re viewing the table in Draft or Web Layout view, you will see the header row only once.

    Kind Regards Segunfunmi
