The following page gives the ideas involved: Numbering Front Matter by Suzanne Barnhill, MVP
The buttons/menus/controls on the Mac may be different, but the document structure is the same. Here are the steps.
- Insert a Section break previous to the page you want to be your number 1. This would be a Next Page or an Odd Page section break.
- Go into the header/footer where you want your page numbering to start.
- Set that header/footer to not be linked to previous.
- Insert your page number where you want it. (Ctrl+Shift+P to insert a Page Number field)
- If you have your headers/footers to have the Different First Page setting, insert the page number in the next page as well.
- Use the Format Page Numbers dialog to tell Word to start numbering for the section with 1.
