The following page gives the ideas involved: Numbering Front Matter by Suzanne Barnhill, MVP

The buttons/menus/controls on the Mac may be different, but the document structure is the same. Here are the steps.

    1. Insert a Section break previous to the page you want to be your number 1. This would be a Next Page or an Odd Page section break.
    2. Go into the header/footer where you want your page numbering to start.
    3. Set that header/footer to not be linked to previous.
    4. Insert your page number where you want it. (Ctrl+Shift+P to insert a Page Number field)
    5. If you have your headers/footers to have the Different First Page setting, insert the page number in the next page as well.
    6. Use the Format Page Numbers dialog to tell Word to start numbering for the section with 1.
