My Cursor Keeps Turning White in Microsoft Word Without Typing

My cursor keeps turning white in Microsoft Word 2016 (I bought lifetime access), even without typing. I already tried changing the cursor settings so that it wouldn't disappear when typing, but that didn't do anything. After a few seconds the text selection cursor will turn white, and, if I hover over dark text, I can see the cursor outline. This has been happening in multiple documents, so not an isolated incident.

This started after a Microsoft update which forced me to log back into my Microsoft account to use Word about a week or two ago. I've tried everything I can find on the internet, but no luck yet. It's very hard to get work done if I can't see my cursor in Word, so what do I need to do to fix this issue so I can get back to work?

I'm using Win 11 and I also had the same issue that my cursor turned white whenever I use google doc and inside other type box, I found this YouTube video very helpful https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hN8LrGogzY

It's better to follow along with the video, I'll also list the steps below.

    • Go to Start
    • Look for the application "RUN" by scrolling through the file or type in the search, open it
    • Type in "MAIN.CPL" and click 'okay' (this will open the mouse properties)
    • On the upper section of the window, click on the tab "Pointer Options"
    • In the visibility section, uncheck the box "hide pointer while typing" if that is checked (not done yet)
    • On the upper section of the window, click on the tab "Pointers"
    • In the Customize box, scroll down to "Text Select", click on it, on the right bottom click on browse,
    • Scroll through the list until you see "beam_r" click on it and click open
    • Lastly click Apply

The steps may look messy so I would highly recommend you to follow the video. Hopefully this helps.

Hi, guys. I have got a new, simple and complete solution from a sensor tech supporter of Lenovo. It works perfectly for me. The followings are the details.

    1. Open Notebook, and fill it in with the following Code, as shown in Figure:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Dwm]

    "OverlayTestMode"=dword:00000005

    1. Save the file with the format”.reg“, the name is arbitrary, for example as FixCursorBug.
    2. Double-click the FixCursorBug.reg, and continue till new Infos are merged into the registry.
    3. Restart the OS.
    4. Test and enjoy it.

I found an valid method provided by Jean-Lu.

    https://www.thefreewindows.com/13055/ms-office-mouse-cursor-disappears-invisible/

To facilitate reading, copy as follows.

Jean-Luc Mercier i had this problem and i solved it ...

I went to the control panel / mouse
in the mouse properties parameters I ckecked the "display pointer trails" checkbox

Then i clicked on the "Apply" button.

I instantly could see the place of the cursor while moving it in a word document but ... disappearing again when stopping the movement.
This was a first step, partially solving the problem since i could see where i stood with my pointer.

I returned to the mouse setting parameters and i unchecked the "display pointer trails" ...
and ... surprisingly everything was ok again ... :-D incredible !!!
So this is something that worked for me ... that I hope that this stupid manipulation will work for people experiencing the same issue.

    Jean-Luc" It is awsome!

I am having the same issues. This happened all on a sudden. Only when I am using MS Word, the cursor is no where to be found in the page as it is white.

Researched through internet and tried all the fixes recommended. But still the problem persists. Don't know if this the problem with MS Word only.

That was exactly my problem, and it's still there with no Microsoft support. It's like they are trying to pretend this doesn't exist so they won't need to put in the work to fix it. This only happens in Word.

I switched the type of cursor and it solved 90% of the issues. The cursor looks different now, but it still gets stuck and turns white (like it's supposed to when you scroll) and stubbornly stays that way for longer than it's supposed to. At least now it's not permanent until I exit Word, but it's still an issue which interferes with my work.
