Is it possible to create a header style in Word to display an exercise header such as the following?

That is, I want the numbering in bold red and the word Exercises in bold blue.

Microsoft 365 and Office | Word | For home | Windows

If you only need this type of numbering in one document, then follow Stefan's advice. But if you need to reuse this as a style that you can apply in the future, you'll need one extra step. While creating the outline numbering list style, select the Font button and set the color to red there:

Then you don't need to select and recolor the numbering as a separate step.

Set up the numbered headings; see https://shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/numbering20072010.html. Modify the appropriate heading styles so that the text color is blue.

Finally, click to select the auto number and change its text color to red.

Repeat these steps for all heading levels.

Sorry for the mix-up. In the “Style type” drop-down list, you should select “Paragraph” instead of “Heading.” This will allow you to create a new paragraph style that you can apply to your header text.

If this doesn't work for you. You can try other suggestion in the thread

    Hi AnnaThomas,

I started following your instructions, but when I got to the point 'select "Heading" from the "Style type" drop-down list', I didn't find "Heading" listed. The only options were; Paragraph, Character, Linked, Table, and List.

    Hi Mespia

I'm AnnaThomas and I'd happily help you with your question. In this Forum, we are Microsoft consumers just like yourself.

Here are the steps you can follow:

In your Word document, select the text that you want to format as a header. On the Home tab, click on the Styles pane launcher to open the Styles pane. At the bottom of the Styles pane, click on the New Style button to create a new style. In the Create New Style from Formatting dialog box, give your new style a name and select “Heading” from the “Style type” drop-down list. Click on the Format button at the bottom of the dialog box and choose Font from the menu. In the Font dialog box, select “Bold” from the “Font style” list and choose “Red” from the “Color” drop-down list. Click OK to apply these formatting options to your new style. Next, place your cursor between the number and the word “Exercises” in your header text and press Enter to move “Exercises” to a new line. Select the word “Exercises” and repeat steps 5-6 above, but this time choose “Blue” from the “Color” drop-down list in the Font dialog box. Finally, place your cursor at the end of the word “Exercises” and press Delete to move it back up to the same line as the number.

I hope this helps ;-), let me know if this is contrary to what you need, I would still be helpful to answer more of your questions.

    Best Regards,

    AnnaThomas
