Onenote 2016 does not appear to be compatible with Office 365 / Windows 11

I have just got a new laptop with Windows 11 with Office 365. Previously using Windows 10 and Office 2016. My old Onenote notebooks (Onenote 2016) don't seem to have downloaded and instead I am seeing some old notebooks from 2012 - 2015. I am not sure if this is a Windows problem or a problem with Office. Any advice as to how to access/transfer my old onenote files which are still on my old laptop? There are a lot of sections so it will be difficult to copy across manually. Many thanks.

Hello Anne

I’m Adeyemi and I’d be happy to help you with your question. In this forum, we are Microsoft consumers just like yourself.

OneNote 2016 is a free desktop app that runs on all supported versions of Microsoft Windows and is part of Office 2019 and Microsoft 365. It is different from OneNote for Windows 10, which is the OneNote app that is pre-installed on all editions of Windows 10.

If you're having trouble accessing your old OneNote notebooks from OneNote 2016 on your new laptop with Windows 11 and Office 365, you might want to try opening them directly from the OneDrive website. If your notebooks are stored in the cloud, you should be able to access them from any device by signing in to your Microsoft account on the OneDrive website.

If your notebooks are stored locally on your old laptop, you can try copying them to a USB drive or external hard drive and then transferring them to your new laptop. Once the notebooks are on your new laptop, you can open them in OneNote by going to File > Open and selecting the notebook file.
