Forgot Excel Workbook Password

Hi,

I've forgotten the password  for one of my Excel files, and it has very critical data. I store it on my computer and my personal OneDrive.

I can't remember the password which I've input for the last change.

However - as I also store this file on OneDrive, and I can see the previous versions for that Excel file, so I download some previous versions of the file - which I know that the password is still unchanged (and I know this previous password clearly )

But when I open the previous versions of file, input the previous password that I know it is correct one, there still error that password is not correct.

Can someone please advise me how to get back the version of the file - which I can input the previous password to a previous version of the file. I understand that the change in the file since previous version to the latest update is lost, but the rest data is important to me.

Thanks for you kind support!

    Hi Trung Le Hoang,

    Thanks for getting back.

To answer your question, when you say many versions, do you mean the older files of that specific Excel file?

I can't provide enough information, but I believe the password from the old file could possibly be the same, unless renewed. What I mean is that, the password on the new verison of the file could have been the same or not.

However, that is worth a try and see if it works. If not, then there's a specific password setup on that new version of the file.

    Sincerely

    Hi ReynaldoB

    Thank you for your help.

My question is - I saw many versions of that particular Excel file on my OneDrive, so if the previous version is old, does it come with previous password?

    Thanks and regards,

    Trung Le

    Hi Lê Hoàng Trung

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft Community forum. I hope you're doing well.

Based on your description, it seems to be that you have a problem with opening your Excel file due to incorrect password. I am sorry to hear about your Excel workbook.

I would like to set your proper expectation that we do not have tools for password recovery or removal of passwords on files. Since the file is protected, you have to unprotect the file by being able to open the workbook and remove the password. Change or remove workbook passwords - Microsoft Support

You may need to use a third party software in order for you get access to that protected file. Please use any third party software at your own risk.

I look forward to your reply.

    Sincerely
