How do I get Header & Footer Options to be different for the Header and the Footer?

In Header & Footer there are three "Options" that I select differently for the header and footer. How do I get one set of selections for the Footer and different set for the Header? Every time I make selections for the footer, they get applied to the header and vice versa. I am trying to have continuous pages on the bottom of every page with the book title on the top of the left-hand page and the chapter title on the right-hand page, with no header on the first page of the section. Each chapter is a new section. It seems that I can have the correct pagination OR the correct headers but not both at the same time. In other words, one set of OPTIONS is fixed both for header and footer. I have managed to get this right in the past but can't seem to do it now. It has never been clear what the control concept is operating here.

Thanks so much for your responses. I may have stumbled on the answer to my own question. I set the OPTIONS for my header--Diff. First Page, Diff. Odd and Even. That left my page numbers only on every other page. THEN I clicked on the footer on a page WITHOUT a page number and clicked on PAGE NUMBER and selected a format with the number in the middle of the bottom of the page. That placed a page number on EVERY formerly blank page [the even numbered pages]. Voila! Case closed. I now have page numbers on every page and my header is formatted as desired.

Moderator's Note: The options for Different Even and Odd Header/Footer apply to both the header and the footer. It activates a separate header and a separate footer for even-numbered pages. It can be necessary to duplicate content you want in both even and odd headers or footers.

As Charles said, "Different Odd and Even" applies to the whole document, while "Different First Page" can be set for specific sections, but both apply to both header and footer. Since you want the footer to be the same for all pages, you must copy the content from one footer into the other one or two. Note this gotcha: No matter how carefully you copy the footer content without the final paragraph mark and paste including the paragraph mark, Word will insert an extra empty paragraph, which will make your footers inconsistent unless you eliminate it.

Please see my Header/Footer Settings Recap.

Some settings are by the document (even if the dialog seems to tell you something different).

    Some are by Section.

Some are in individual types of headers and footers.

Different even and odd are for the document.

Different first page is for the Section and applies to both headers and footers.

An even easier way to insert a PAGE field is to put the cursor where you want the page number and press Alt+Shift+P.
