Many educational accounts allow only the use of the online version of Word. To install the desktop edition, you'll have to get your own subscription, or buy Office 2021.

That's right, it's the version you use in a browser.

Ok makes sense so when you say the “online” edition it’s when I type it in the URL and open up from there?

    Dear Janay,

Good day! Thank you for posting your query in our community.

Based on your description, you can't edit on Office for Mac.

First, I want to explain that, if you want to edit Office files on Office applications, you need to have the license. To check whether your account have the right license, please follow these steps to verify it:

    1. Sign in to the Office 365 portal.
    2. In the left pane, select Subscriptions.
    3. In the list of subscriptions and licenses, scroll down to the Microsoft 365 <edition> section, and then look for The latest desktop version of Office(you can edit on the Office client if you have this license), or Office for the web(you can edit on the Office Online if you have this license).

If you have The latest desktop version of Office license, you have an Office subscription that's assigned correctly. Then you can try using the Office for Mac license removal tool to remove all the license on this Mac. And then sign back in the Office application with the account. See if issue persist.

How to remove Office license files on a Mac(please sign out all the Office applications first).

If the problem persists, please provide a full screenshot of your subscription page for us.

    Sincerely,
