How do I change the default style for Word docs created in the browser?

Hello. I often use my browser-based version of MS Word 365. I would like the change the default/normal template, but this doesn't seem possible.

I can change the default styles and the normal template for my desktop-based version, but doing so doesn't affect documents I subsequently create in the browser-based version.

Is there any way to change the default style for new documents created in the browser?

I'm using a Windows-based machine, and Edge browser. Thanks.

As far as I know, Word Online does not fully support true templates, *.dotx files.

However, you can modify an online document (*.docx) with the settings you prefer and use it as a "template" in Word Online. Apply the style you want to start with and modify its settings. You will have to save the document under a new name each time you want to start a new document, of course.

In most cases, it is safer to use the full, locally installed version of Word for Windows (or Mac OS) to edit documents, especially longer documents.

You mean just open that document every time, rather than creating a new blank one? I guess a work-around's better than nothing. Thanks!

For Word Online, those steps can be used as a workaround, yes.

Generally, I recommend that you use the full version of Word (for Windows or Mac), though. It will be safer to edit documents in the full version. As a bonus, you get to make use of true templates.
