copy and pasting files

I have read earlier replies to a similar problem. If I try to copy and paste a file or a folder, I receive the message "Item not collected. Format not supported by Office Clipboard". This only started happening a few days ago and I have not installed anything new on my PC that could have been the cause. Copying and pasting text stills works OK, which seems to have been the problem reported some time ago elsewhere on this forum..

One other thing that has become apparent with the clipboard. I use the "print screen" button regularly, usually to take screenshots of Flightsim 2004 when I have created something new for it (yes I still use the 2004 version, I can do things with it I would never be able to do with MSFS2020). It used to be possible to take several screenshots in succession. Now I can only take one then I get an "Item not collected. Delete items to create available space" message. This suggests that the memory available to the clipboard has been reduced substantially. Also on the subject of FS2004, I use "copy and paste" a LOT, so its unavailability is proving VERY frustrating.

No I haven't uninstalled AVG yet. Independent reviews give it a better rating than Windows Defender.

What are the specific steps you are trying to follow?

As far as I know, you can only copy and paste folders and files between locations in the Windows file manager, called File Explorer.

The Office Clipboard, when you are using it, will handle data that Office files support.

    Hello Cj241101,

I’m Segunfunmi, an Independent Advisor and Microsoft user like you. Thanks for posting the query here in this forum.

If you get the error “Item not Collected: Format not supported by Office Clipboard”, you can try the following solutions:

Please open the file in an application that can save it again in a compatible format (such as Word or Notepad). Then, copy the new version back into your Clipboard. Restart the Clipboard service.

Select the text in Word or Excel and hit Control C TWICE to bring up the 24-item panel. This may reset the office clipboard.

    Run Outlook in safe mode.

Turn the Office Clipboard on or off by clicking the arrow next to Clipboard in Excel, Word or PowerPoint.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Kind regards, Segunfunmi.

Thanks for the clarification. It is not clear why the Office clipboard would be involved in the processes you describe. Maybe AVG is responsible, as you suggest. I haven't tested that product in years, but I find that in most cases, the built-in antivirus and firewall application in Windows, Windows Defender, does a decent job. Therefore I suggest that you uninstall AVG.

Hi Stefan, the problem I have been getting relates to copying photos and other files between different locations on the PC. Copying and pasting text within a document seems unaffected.

When I take photos and connect my camera to the PC, I drag the photos from the camera into a folder I call "temp". There I will do any editing using MS Photos and give the photos file names. I then copy the edited photos into various other folders depending on their subject. I have been able to do this for many years with no problem. Until around a week ago when the error message began appearing. I have since been using "drag and drop" to move my photos but that won't work if I want a photo to appear in more than 1 folder. A sort of work around is to put my "temp" folder on a different drive from the drive holding my photos, then "drag and drop" works as "copy" rather than "move". It would be nice to get to the bottom of what is different that is causing the problem, though - I have not installed anything new - the only possibility I can think of is the regular updates from AVG (internet security, driver updater, tune up) that get installed whether I want them or not.

    Thanks for your prompt reply.

    Colin Jones
