Migrate Outlook.com email address to Microsoft 365 Family

I have had a Microsoft 365 Family account for a long time. The email address used when I originally subscribed was a third party pop3 account. I have a need to dump my email client and wanted to take advantage of the Outlook.com email client since I'm paying for 365. I incorrectly created a new Outlook.com account and its not associated at all with my 365 Family account.

Is there a way to migrate this new Outlook.com account to 365 Family so I wont lose the ****@outlook.com email address or do I have to remove the new outlook.com account altogether ??

I should have created an alias in my 365 family account and then made the new alias the primary alias if I understand it correctly,

Thanks for any clarification !!

Bjw

The data file is an ost - so its right- and Outlook uses the primary account name for the data file name.

I'm a little gun-shy changing my primary alias as I have this fear I wont be able to get back into Outlook at all and have no choice but to start all over and re-install Office, or worse (which seems to be the norm these days). << If you just change the primary alias, the most you'll need to do is sign in using the Outlook.com alias. DO NOT do anything more than click the make primary link!

Thanks Diane for taking the time to provide an answer !!

I like "easy" so will just delete the new outlook.com account and create the alias in my existing M365 Family account.

One additional question if you have time,

I never had an outlook.com alias in my M365 Family subscription, my current primary M365 alias is a pop3 account from my current email provider (Charter) along with four additional email address's each having a dedicated mailbox, so 5 dedicated pop3 mailboxes. If I create a new outlook.com alias in M365, lets say it will be ******@Outlook.com, will that alias be an exchange account ?? Can it (or should it) be set-up as a pop3 or imap ?? Also, I will eventually be making the new outlook.com alias my primary M365 alias.

I'm trying to move away from my current email client and take advantage of my M365 Family subscription so I will need to create several new outlook.com aliases to replace the pop accounts. I am not clear on how a new outlook.com alias should be set up and only have one chance per alias to get it right so thats why I ask the "stupid" questions.

Thanks very much for the reply !!

You cannot move an address to another account. You either need to make new alias in the account that has the subscription (easiest) or if you really want this address, share your family subscription with it (if you have an available share) and when the subscription expires, subscribe in the new account.

Thanks, several issues with your reply,

    1. The link is no good, it gives a Page 404-Page Not found error.
    2. I stated I have Microsoft 365 Family, NOT the business version.
    3. There is no email to move as the outlook.com email primary alias is only a day old. I just wanted to know if the account could be moved thus saving the new email address.
    4. Creating an alias in Microsoft 365 won't work because the email alias is already the primary alias used in the Outlook.com account I'm trying to move.

Most of your reply seems like it was cut-n-pasted from old outdated replies to others. I appreciate the help but you're not coming across as someone experienced enough to understand what I'm asking.

I think I'll follow my first thought which was to remove the Outlook.com account and start over, this time creating another new alias within Microsoft 365 Family.

Hey there, my name is Ajibola and I'm excited to help you out today!

You can migrate your Outlook.com account to your Microsoft 365 Family account by following the steps outlined in this Microsoft Learn article ----https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/mailbox-migration/migrating-imap-mailboxes/migrating-your-outlook-com-account.

You will need to enable two-step verification (also known as two-factor authentication) and create an app password in Outlook.com or Hotmail.com. After you have set up two-step verification, you can obtain an app password that you will have to use in order to use Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) migration to copy email from your Outlook.com or Hotmail.com account to your Microsoft 365 or Office 365 for business account. If your Microsoft 365 or Office 365 admin is moving email messages from your Outlook.com or Hotmail.com account to Microsoft 365 or Office 365 on your behalf, you’ll need to give them your app password.

If you want to move the new Outlook.com account to your Microsoft 365 Family account, you can try creating an alias in your Microsoft 365 Family account and then making the new alias the primary alias. However, there is no way to move an alias from one Outlook.com account to another. If you delete an alias, it is permanently removed and cannot be recovered
