Outlook 365 does not add Yahoo mail - I have tried all the fixes but nothing works (Outlook for Windows)

I think I have tried it all... literally have spent hours reviewing community articles here and all over the web.

Problem: Try to add Yahoo mail account and the end result is Outlook error message. I had different types of error messages but now it is consistent and says "Sorry we could not sign you into YahooImap, Please try again" (I tried many many times)

In many articles the steps described to fix the problem have or a type of window or field that in my case does not correspond to what I can see on my screen:

System details

Edition Windows 11 Home in S mode

Version 23H2

Installed on ‎09/‎08/‎2023

OS build 22631.2265

Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22674.1000.0

Things that I have tried according to the articles:

  • 2way authenticator set-up in yahoo.mail
  • Generation of an App password ==> In my case there is no drop-down in yahoo to choose Outlook and I had to enter by typing (Outlook Desk, Outlook, Outlook 365... tried several times none work)
  • In the normal set-up, different to many articles the window that pops up to enter user and password the yahoo app window, go over all the verifications, and in the first couple of tries I would even get a message in Yahoo saying "Your Account was used to sing in on Mail and Calendar" but on the side of outlook I would get error message. and fail installation.
  • Removed VPN
  • Tried Manual set-up entering all different combinations of the IMAP configurations provided in articles and by the yahoo site: Outlook only provides the following options Server - imap.mail.yahoo.com Port - 993 Encryption Method:(None, SSL/TLS, STARTTLS, Auto) tried them all Require Log-on using SAP (tried ticking the box, and not) Server - smtp.mail.yahoo.com Port - 465 or 587 (tried both) Encryption Method:(None, SSL/TLS, STARTTLS, Auto) tried them all Require Log-on using SAP (tried ticking the box, and not)
  • Joined Microsoft Insiders to be able to download Microsoft 11 updates and select the Beta channel, updated all drivers, did all the updates, changed channels. This was supposed to be the most recent fix and but nothing....

So here I am, almost giving up o the idea but hope the answer is out there. It is the only account I have had for more than 30 years but want to transition slowly to my outlook email for security reasons.

Note: I tried adding a Gmail account and it went in without any problems.

    Hello

I’m Adeyemi and I’d be happy to help you with your question.

Based on the information you've provided and the search results, it appears that the issue might be related to the app password. Yahoo accounts use two-factor authentication to help verify that you're the person trying to access your email account. To add your email account to Outlook, you'll need an app password, also known as an application password.

Here are the steps to generate an app password in Yahoo:

    1. Go to the Yahoo website from your browser and select the settings icon in the upper right corner of the screen.
    2. Select Account info > Account security. You may need to sign in again.
    3. If Two-step verification isn't turned on, you'll need to do that before you continue.
    4. Then select Manage app passwords.
    5. Select Outlook Desktop from the drop-down list, and then select Generate.

Yahoo will display an app password for you. Copy this password (without the spaces) and enter this password when Outlook prompts you for a password. Once you've copied this app password, you can add your Yahoo! email account to Outlook using the steps found in Add an email account to Outlook. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/can-t-add-an-yahoo-email-account-to-outlook-ff76dd33-3127-42ac-b93f-1da2dc9054c7.

If these steps don't work, another user suggested going back to Outlook 365 and logging in using this generated password instead of your usual Yahoo password. . https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook_com/forum/all/cannot-connect-outlook-365-to-yahoo-imap-account/11ea194b-7b93-456c-8a2a-ec6940de8b2a.

    I hope this helps!

Hi Isaac, create an App password as per Adayemi, the go to Outlook>File>Account Settings>Account Settings>Click on the Yahoo email address>Repair>Click on the little down arrow>Click in>Let me repair account manually>In there you can change or in you case add the App password.
