Taking Advantage of my Free 1TB storage with my Microsoft Account

I'm only using 4% of my 1TB free storage.

How do I take advantage of all this free storage space?

When I upload music or photographs to the drive, all the files are synchronized back to my local drive, which of course uses most of my local drive space.

I want to store in the cloud but don't want to synchronize those files with my local drive. Everything I try doesn't work. I'm sure it's a simple solution, I just can't figure it out.

I'm using Windows 11 with all updates installed.

    Hello Wayne,

Greetings for the day! I’m an Independent Advisor and Microsoft user like you and I'm glad to provide you information regarding your scenario.

OneDrive Files On-Demand helps you access all the files in your cloud storage in OneDrive without having to download them and use storage space on your computer.

When you turn on Files On-Demand, you’ll still see all your files as online-only files in File Explorer, but they won't take up space. When you’re connected to the Internet, you’ll be able to use the files like every other file on your device.

You can also select files and folders to be always available, even if you're offline. OneDrive will download them, and they'll take up space on your PC.

Please find the details here - https://support.microsoft.com/office/0e6860d3-d9f3-4971-b321-7092438fb38e

OR to remove the local copy, kindly try to use "Free up space" option

    1. Open File Explorer where you kept the photos.
    2. Click on OneDrive in the left-hand column.
    3. Navigate to the file or folder in question.
    4. Right-click on the file/folder.
    5. Click on Free up space.
