how do I recover a previous version of document on my macbook air?

I was adding to a very long document when suddenly I appear to have deleted everything but the capital letter S.

The document is supposed to be autosaved.

How can I recover the previous version?

    Hi

First open the document in question, then use browse version history.

The Microsoft page requires me to look for Browse version history. This is greyed out on my computer and I can't access it?

AutoSave only works with OneDrive, so open your OneDrive account and see if you can find it there.

This Microsoft page shows you how to browse your version history: View previous versions of Office files

If the file was saved on your local hard disk, close the file without saving it, then open the last version you saved. You may have lost some work since your last save.

A good practice for saving important files is to use File>Save As on a regular basis, changing the name lightly each time i.e. Document01.docx, Document 02.docx. Then, when your work is complete, delete the intermediate work versions. That way you can only lose the work since your last Save As.
