"Title" field is missing or non-editable when viewing document properties in the Details pane of File Explorer (Win 11)

System details:

  • Windows 11 with update KB5030310 installed (27 Sept 2023)
  • Microsoft 365 with Word Version 2309
  • Word documents are stored locally in a OneDrive folder
  • All documents are .docx
  • Folder is optimised for Documents (but General Items view also does not work)

Problem description:

  • When I highlight a document in File Explorer, its details appear in the Details pane on the right hand side
  • However:
    • The "Title" field is not visible in the Details pane UNLESS the document already has a Title
    • The "Title" field is not editable in the Details pane even if it is visible
  • I therefore cannot give new documents a title directly from the Details pane
  • This issue has appeared sometime in the last week

Desired solution:

  • An equally convenient way to change or add a Title for a Word document as previously. (I am aware that I can edit it by opening the Document properties and heading to Details, but this is several additional clicks)
  • I am open to other means of adding/editing Titles (e.g. a bulk edit script) but the original functionality of being able to edit directly from the Details pane would be best

    Hi Jack,

Thanks for posting in the community. We are happy to help you.

According to your description, I would like to collect more information to troubleshoot the situation.

    1. Does the situation happen to all Office documents or only happen to Word documents (.docx)? Please test in other Office files, like the Excel workbook, and check again.
    2. Does the situation happen to all files on your device or only to files in the OneDrive local folder?
    3. Please switch to another Windows user profile (if you don’t have another Windows user profile, please create a new Windows user profile, then switch to the new user profile), and then check again.

We look forward to your response. Thanks for your cooperation.

    Sincerely,

    George | Microsoft Community Moderator

If you right click on a document in the FIle Explorer and then left click on Properties and go to the Details tab of the Properties dialog, can you then enter a title for the document?
