What is difference between O365 Usertype 'Regular' and 'System'

Hello,

I am interested in learning what is the difference between O365 Usertype 'Regular' and 'System'?

Also, how relevant is log collection for Usertype 'System' in respect to online security? Are those useful indicative of any suspicious activities? And are they generated due to App trying to fetch access token at time of authentication?

Thank you.

Dear Riva Vaishnani,

Good day.

Per the description you have shared, your query is related to Microsoft Graph SDK . It will be best if you reach out to them so you can be assisted accurately.

Please contact them via Microsoft Graph SDK - Microsoft Q&A.

In the meantime, according to the Microsoft documentation, the UserType attribute in Office 365 can have two values: Regular and System. The Regular UserType is assigned to a user account that is created and managed by an administrator. The System UserType is assigned to a system account that is created and managed by the system. System accounts are used by Office 365 services and applications to perform automated tasks, such as sending email notifications or performing maintenance tasks.

Regarding your question about log collection for System UserType, the Microsoft documentation does not provide any information about it. However, it is possible that logs are generated for System UserType accounts as well, as they are used by Office 365 services and applications to perform automated tasks. These logs may be useful in detecting suspicious activities related to the automated tasks performed by the system accounts.

Please note that the information provided is based on the retrieved documents and may not be exhaustive. Thank you for choosing Microsoft as your partner in business.

Sincerely    Eben Ezer Tres | Microsoft Community Moderator
