Alt+I key shortcuts don't work

Split from this thread.

I am having the same issue.

ALT key commands are the ones I used most that quit working. The key letters aren't underlined anymore either.

CTRL key commands are still working.

I see that taking a break between presses works, but why the change? Is there some reason it can't keep operating the way it has for decades?

It apparently has to do with the introduction of "Draft with Copilot" which apparently uses the Alt+I shortcut.

I have the same issue. Alt-I-T no longer works for me, but I think I found an alternate way to get the date/time. Does the date/time menu appear when you press Alt-N-D?

Please read through the entire thread.

Alt [release] I [release] T should work.

Alt [release] N [release] D should work.

    OH MY GOSH!!!! This works!!

I have been fretting over this for the last 9-12 months. It has been a point of serious irritation for me.

Thank you so much for posting this.

Why would MS change this? It seems asinine to me. Alt+I has been a standard keystroke for decades.

The quickest way, by far, to insert a "standard" footnote is to use the built-in keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Alt+F.

That said, I can still use Alt, i, n, n here to display the Footnote and Endnote dialog box (Word 2021, US English interface).

Which version of Office are you running?

Your question is similar, but not the same as the one asked about Ctrl+ keyboard shortcuts not working. I've split it off so that it can get a good answer.

Which version of Word are you using?

    Operating system?

Do you have the same problem if you start Word in safe mode?

Open Office apps in safe mode on a Windows PC - Microsoft Office

I assume that you are talking about the Ribbon tips that show up next to tabs and choices on the Ribbon when you press the Alt key. If this is mistaken, please let us know.
