Show colored underline behind rather than in front of the text

Hello,

I have an issue with Word for Mac. I am using Office Home & Business 2021.

I changed the style of the underline for some text. In the font window the preview looks great where the text is above the underline:

In the Word document itself and when I print it, the underline is above the text and covers parts of the letters, i.e. the letter "g". This looks by far less good:

How can I change this?

Thank you,

Philip

Sorry, that's not possible using the built-in commands. You would have to manually draw a line under each word that you want to appear underlined. Or you can select only characters without a descender and apply the underline to just those.

Depending on your requirements you may want to investigate desktop publishing software. I haven't used it in years but IIRC InDesign & QuarkXPress provide advanced typesetting capabilities which may include underlining variations.

In my opinion it just does not look so nice even if it might be illogical based on how you draw underlines on the paper. Well, I will and have to live with that ;-)

Thank you, John. Sad to hear that.

Why so? In a handwritten or typed document do you create the underline first then insert the text on top of it? It's only. apparent because of using an underline color which differs from the font color.
