Excel and word for iPad free versions giving message “ To edit and save sign in with a subscription”.

I have used your free version of excel and word for iPad on my iPads for the last few years (and love them).  I used it on 14/8 and all was fine but today, 16/8, it will not let me create or update and says “To edit and save sign in with a subscription”.

I am using an iPad Air (5th generation), which is not a pro model and I have been using it since January without problems.

Has your policy for free usage changed or is there something I can do to get my free usage back?

Many thanks.

    Hi Debbie,

Thanks for posting on the forum today. I’m Bambi and I’ll be happy to assist you.

Technically, there is no free version of Office apps. It’s either you have Office or a Microsoft 365 subscription.

However, for iPhone and iPad users, you can use the downloaded apps from App Store without a subscription for some reason but with limited features.

You can choose to sign in and if you’re prompted to subscribe, choose “not now” and proceed to use the app.

Please note that this is a workaround, you will still need to purchase Office or a subscription for Microsoft 365 to get the many interesting features of the apps.

I hope this information helps. Let me know if you need further assistance.

    Best Regards, Bambi

Thanks for your response. I would suggest you don’t sign in. Choose the “not now” or “skip” after you have clicked on “sign in”. So technically, you are not signing in.

    Hi Bambi,

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. I am signed in so I logged out and back in again. I was not prompted to subscribe but am just still getting the message

    “No Microsoft 365 Subscription Found

No Microsoft 365 subscription was found for <my ID>.

Try Microsoft 365 free for one month or use another account to activate an existing subscription.”

I tried logging into a different account but it was the same.

I have closed and reopened the app and shutdown and restarted my iPad multiple times during this process (usually my go to for fixing stuff), but has had no effect.

Any help very much appreciated, Debbie
