Spell Check not working

Anonymous

I have checked a number of existing threads in this community, and I have applied all the other possible solutions I have found that are related however my spell check is still not working. Proof reading is time consuming, so I have been having to use outlook and then copy and paste into word, which is super frustrating.

Please see the screen shot attached, I intentionally type words wrong expecting them to be underlined, nope, then I run the spell check expecting it to catch them, and it says there are no issues.

The image upload seems to contradict itself here, so I will provide what I typed in Word below.

Tset I know thyse wodrs aer wongr

Word says all the above words are correct. We all know they are not. I checked the language and all the proofing settings, I have found nothing existing in this community has assisted me in repairing this issue.

Thanks

A

Select one of those words that are obviously incorrect, such as "wongr," and then click Review tab > Language group > Language > Set Proofing Language. In the dialog box, verify that you see the correct language specified for the selection and also that "Do not check spelling or grammar" is cleared.

If you can't get it sorted, consider sharing the problem document with the forum.

i have turned on turned off, restarted you name it, ive tried it. still cant get spellcheck to work. as you can see on this message, no spell check used to correct anything. ugh

I struggled with this for a while. In my case the issue was that Word was changing languages on certain documents or even just sections of documents and the "Do not check spelling or grammar" was checking itself for certain documents or sections of documents. I am sure there are reasons for why this happens, but at least I know how to fix it now. It would be worth checking when you have this issue in case this applies to your situation. My fix:

    1. CTRL-A to select the entire document
    2. Review Tab on top menu of document
    3. Click Language and Set Proofing Language to open box below
    4. Verify correct language is selected
    5. Verify the box "Do not check spelling or grammar" is unchecked

    Hello,

Thank you for your reply however nothing in the article you posted helped. I worked through all that might apply to missed words in spell check. As for the file upload this is what I did, and it does not seem to work for the initial submissions for .jpg files, which is silly. It says that it is uploaded but it also says that it could not be uploaded...... The below image is exactly what I originally attempted to upload and it would not post. Regardless you can see that the spell check is not working, after attempting the below items in the article you posted there is still no spell checking.

    • Custom Dictionaries
    • Nothing is marked as misspelled
    • Exempting specific text from spell checking

I read through all the other items and they do not see related to my issue. The only time I can get spell check to work is if I change the language to something else then back to English. But this only fixes the issue for that single document during that single use, this needs to be done for every single document when it is newly opened or newly created, and even then sometimes this band aid does not work.

Hello, I just had this same exact issue and managed to get it working correctly by going into Review tab > Language group > Language > Language Preferences > Proofing group and unchecking 'Check spelling as you type'. Click ok to close the window, then repeat the process to reenable Check spelling as you go.

At least in my case turning this off and back on made my spellcheck start working again. Hope this helps someone.

Mine still doesn't work, my IT department has even done a number of things with Word as well. Uninstall reinstall etc. Microsoft clearly has little care if their products work. I have to copy and paste everything out of Word into a new Outlook email to spell check it. But many companies are stuck with Microsoft so they simply do not seem to care if their products work. Nothing in the original thread I posted or in any of these subsequent threads has made a difference on my Word.
