I can't get Word 365 out of Compatibility Mode

Every time Word 365 opens its own default document template for a new document, it does so in Compatibility Mode, even though I've set File > Options > Save > "Save files in this format" to .docx. How can I get Word to open documents out of Compatibility Mode? I'm using Windows 11.

Thanks

BTW, I've updated to the latest version of Word 365.

I've managed with the help of Chat GPT to find a workaround so that Word saves documents in the latest format, i.e. out of Compatibility Mode, and that's by using Save As, but it's still opening all new documents in Compatibility Mode and saving them by default in Compatibility Mode. I'd obviously like Word to open all its new documents in the latest format so I don't have to keep using the Save As option.

    Hello PF.

I’m Segunfunmi, an Independent Advisor and Microsoft user like you. Thanks for posting the query here in this forum.

You’ve already tried changing the default save format to .docx, but Word is still opening new documents in Compatibility Mode. One possible solution is to check if the default document template (Normal. dotm) is saved in an older format. If it is, you can try deleting or renaming the Normal. dot file will force Word to create a new default template in the latest format. Here’s how you can do this:

Close all instances of Word. Open File Explorer, paste %appdata%\Microsoft\Templates into the address bar, then press Enter. Locate the Normal. Dot the file and delete or rename it (e.g., to Normal_old. dot). Restart Word. It should create a new Normal—dot file in the latest format. If this doesn’t work, you can try resetting Word’s settings by deleting or renaming the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word registry key. However, please note that this will reset all your Word settings and should be done cautiously.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any further questions.

    Kind regards, Segunfunmi.

If your Normal template doesn't contain any customizations, then renaming it as Segunfunmi suggests will do the trick. But you can also update the template itself. The easiest way to open it is as follows:

    1.    In Word, press Alt+F11; the Visual Basic Editor opens.

    1. Press Ctrl+G to activate the Immediate window.
    2. In that window, type (or paste)

         NormalTemplate.OpenAsDocument

    and press Enter.

Normal opens, but note that it may not be on top of all windows. You can close the Visual Basic Editor. Then use File | Info | Convert to convert it to the latest format.

Is there a fix coming for this bug? The new Normal.dotx is a bad workaround for me; I've invested a great deal of time in customizing my Normal.dotx.

If you renamed Normal.dotm and let Word create a new one, then you did lose customizations. If you had converted it as I suggested, you would not have lost them.
