How do I remove split screen automatic feature in Excel?

It seems I have clicked somewhere by mistake and activated the feature where the excel spreadsheet is in split screen as a default each time I create a new spreadsheet. How do I remove this automatic feature of a split screen? I know I can go click on View then Split, and this fixes it for this particular spreadsheet, but this doesn't stop it from happening again with another new spreadsheet.

    Hello GM_5,

I'm Ibhadighi and I'd happily help you with your question. In this forum, we are Microsoft consumers just like yourself.

The issue where Excel opens new spreadsheets in split screen mode by default is likely due to a change in the default template or view settings. To resolve this and prevent Excel from opening new spreadsheets in split screen mode, follow these steps:

    1. **Reset the Default View**:
      • Open a new Excel spreadsheet.
      • Make sure the split screen is not active. If it is, go to the View tab and click on Split to remove the split view.
      • Adjust the view to how you want it to appear by default (e.g., normal view, 100% zoom, etc.).
    2. **Save as Default Template**:
      • After setting up the view, save this workbook as the default template.
      • Go to File > Save As.
      • In the dialog box, navigate to the Excel default templates location. This is typically in C:\Users\[YourUserName]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART.
      • Name the file Book.xltx (for Excel Workbook) or Book.xltm (if you want macros).
      • Choose Excel Template (*.xltx) or Excel Macro-Enabled Template (*.xltm) as the file type.
      • Click Save.
    3. **Restart Excel**:
      • Close Excel completely and then reopen it.
      • Create a new workbook to test if the split screen issue is resolved.
    4. **Check Excel Options**:
      • If the issue persists, go to File > Options.
      • In the Excel Options dialog box, explore sections like Advanced or General to see if there's any setting related to the default view or window layout that might be causing the issue.
    5. **Excel Add-Ins**:
      • Sometimes, add-ins can affect Excel's behavior. Check if there are any add-ins enabled that might be causing this issue.
      • Go to File > Options > Add-Ins. Under Manage, select Excel Add-ins and click Go. Try disabling add-ins to see if it resolves the issue.
    6. **Repair Office Installation**:
      • If none of the above steps work, there might be an issue with your Office installation. You can try repairing it via the Control Panel.

If you're using a work or school computer, there may be specific configurations set by your IT department. In such cases, consulting them might provide a solution.

These steps should help in resolving the issue of Excel opening new spreadsheets in split screen mode by default.

    I hope this helps.

    Best Regards, Ibhadighi
