Activate Office 2021 Home & Business without account

I am in a situation where I need to install Office 2021 Home & Business on a PC that is part of an industrial machine that will be delivered to a customer. Since it will not have a dedicated user, we do not have a specific Microsoft account to bind the product key with. Is there any way to activate Office 2021 without an account? Or at least bind the product key to the device instead.

Thanks in advance. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Greetings for anyone having this problem. Unfortunately if you are reading this you already know it cannot be done. The best solution is to not buy retail products from MS in the first place. They want you to link everything you got to their service. Now days you even need to hack your way into new Windows 11 after install because they do not allow it to start without PC being offline.

    That being said you can use some aftermarket toolkits for activating/converting your retail office to volume license and activate it. You still have a legit copy and license for that exact version in case of MS sanctioned inspection.

    Why use MS Office anyway? For 99% of users LibreOffice and Thunderbird will do everything and more than Office for free. And that is without interface change every year, telemetry, and this kind of waste of time on the forums where no one ever got any help from MS reps.

    And with the "new "new" Outlook" you better not receive any emails with it because it ALL goes to MS, including your credentials.

    It's unbelievable how hard and user unfriendly they make it to use their products nowadays.

    I bought a license for Office 2021 from a retailer last year, and received a product key.

    Now my installation says that the product key is invalid. Trying to reactivate it, but there's no option what so ever to change the product key. So, uninstalling it and installing it again. Then I get the option to change the product key, but it still remains inactive (product activation failed).

    There's no way I can activate it now by simply using the product key. I only have one microsoft account and logging in with that account doesn't work either.

    They took my money and now I'm stuck with a product I cannot use.

    Yes there are workarounds and activation scripts to possibly get it to work, but I don't feel like the hassle. I'm getting fed up with companies like this. I have given up and will switch to LibreOffice and possibly any time soon also switch from Windows to Linux with all the stuff they are trying to force upon you (no more windows without account sign in, advertisements inside Windows, etc.). What a nightmare!

    I have the same situation. I am installing Microsoft Home & Business 2021 on an industrial computer for installation in a customer's manufacturing facility. The software was purchased through my personal Business Microsoft Account. I can install the product on the industrial PC using my Microsoft account credentials, however, it then becomes linked to my business account, which I don't want my customer to have access to. An example: With Excel File Open, my business One Drive account shows up as an optional location to access files. Also Excel file histories show up showing worksheets I've created for other customers. This install needs to be a local install, without linkage to any Microsoft Account. I have the product keys, but entering them doesn't seem to activate the product. It always wants to access my personal business account.

    Hi Richard, please note that the the 'Owner' of Office Home & Business 2021, that is the person who can reinstall Office or do an online repair or active it, is the 'Owner' of the Microsoft Account associated with the Office. In practice this means the Personal Microsoft Account associated with Office where a company is involved it needs to be the owner of the company. If say you use an employees Personal Microsoft Account and they leave, the company is in a difficult position.

    Imo all the office business licenses should be bound to an umbrella 'IT administrator' account, created for this specific purpose if one doesn't exist already. That avoids binding it to any specific person (or vendor) and allows easy handoff to future IT staff. (Though the MS service agreement says you cannot transfer your credentials to another user, so I'd like to know how this works out legally.)

    Sign in as Administrator on the workstation pc, activate Office by signing into the MS admin account, then use the 'Sign out' link in MS Word's Account section. For Office 2019 and above, this results in a persistent MicrosoftAccount:user credential, which is used to periodically reactivate Office (if deleted, Office will eventually prompt for activation). As far as I can guess, signing out prevents this credential from being used for anything else - but I have not seen any documentation that explains the security properties of this thing, so there's that. On windows 11, I see that this also creates a SSO_POP_User:user credential which allows everything in the system to sign in without asking, but its saved data only persists until logout, so once you do that it should no longer pose a security risk.

    I've set up all workstations like this and all of them have remained activated for years with no issue. Let me know if any of this is wrong.
