in an existing MS Project file, I cannot create a new calendar

Hi,

I have a MS Project file which I normally edit in desktop. I also published it to Project Online.

After having added tasks and resources, I realized that I was still using the Standard Calendar.

When I tried to go to 'Project > Change Working Time', the open "Create New Calendar" was greyed out.

Is it possible to create a new project calendar after having already created a schedule?

If yes, then how can I get the "Create New Calendar" button re-activated?

Or do I have to go to the SharePoint settings in Project Online?

My license is Project Plan 5.

Thanks for any insights provided.

Nick

    Hi Dale,

Thank you for your fast response. It does provide good information.

In parallel to you posting your answer, I actually "stumbled onto" a solution, which I post here so that others may benefit.

If you cannot change the Standard Calendar in MS Project desktop, one cause may be that the Standard Calendar is governed by the Project Online site.

To change it in your own project is not possible because you have no local control.

    You have two choices:

    1. Change the Standard Calendar on the server level - this will affect all other projects on that server, including some that you may not manage.
    2. Create a project calendar on the server level and apply this to your own project(s) only.

I chose the second option so as to not impact others.

    My steps were:

    1. From MS Project desktop, go to the Project Online site where the project has been published to. This will be a SharePoint site.
    2. On that SharePoint site, at the top right corner, click the gear wheel and then choose "Site Settings"
    3. A page full of hyperlinks pops up. At the bottom right of the list, choose "PWA Settings"
    4. In the "Enterprise Data" section, choose "Enterprise Calendars"
    5. Click "New Calendar" and give it a clear description.
    6. Save and exit out of the site settings.

Going back to MS Project, you will now be able to use this calendar as follows:

    1. In MS Project desktop, go to "Project"
    2. Click "Project Info"
    3. Select the new calendar

I just want to say "Wow!" to your thoughtful reply. You are absolutely right, my friend! There is one other option you might have missed, however. In Project Online, the default settings DO NOT allow PMs to create their own project-specific calendars. Microsoft's logic behind this setting is that all calendars should be controlled at the enterprise level, which standardizes scheduling across all projects. However, in some organizations, PMs need to be able to create and use their own calendars on a project by project basis. If this is one of your organization's needs, you can do the following to enable it:

    1. Navigate to the Home page of PWA.
    2. In the upper-right corner of the page, click the Settings menu button and choose the "PWA Settings" item.
    3. On the right side of the PWA Settings page, click the Additional Server Settings link.
    4. On the Additional Server Settings page, select the "Allow projects to use local base calendars" checkbox.
    5. Click the Save button to save these changes.

Once this option is applied, your PMs will be able to create their own calendars as needed. Hope this additional information helps.
