Master slides/layouts formatting not being replicated to slides

Hi there,

I've been developing some templates but some text placeholders won't keep the format applied in the layouts. For example:

  1. in a particular layout I'm using a different bullet point colour but when I go to the actual slide it reverts the colour back to the master slide bullet (not the layout colour)
  2. line spacing sometimes keep the one set in the master, sometimes it assumes the standard 1 pt with 0pt paragraph spacing
  3. same thing with with bullet points kerning, sometimes it uses the one I set, sometimes it goes to the ppt standard
  4. some of the text boxes placeholder set without bullet point in the layout, appear in the slides with bullets with a random indentation.
  5. some text placeholders won't allow formatting changes. Eg.: If I try copying a text placeholder from another layout, when I paste it to the layout I want, depending on the order I do the changes to the formatting it will lock the placeholder not allowing any other changes (line alignment, line spacing, colour etc), and when it allows the changes in the layout, the slide will show something completely different than the format I've set in the layout.

The weirdest thing is that these things are happening only with a few of the placeholders and I can't get my head around why, I've tried recreating them from scratch with the "insert placeholder" tool instead copying from another layout but no success.

(PS: I've tried fixing these in window and mac)

Thanks in advance for the help

If your timeline is used only once or twice in a presentation, create it as a slide, not a layout.

You most likely have broken inheritance between the slide master and layout, or the layout and the slide. This is causing the formatting differences. I would have to examine the actual file to give you a definite answer.

    Hi Sean,

here's a screenshot that exemplifies almost everything I mentioned above:

I've had a few occasions that adding bullet to the boxes and removing then in the layout worked, but in the case it makes it even worse and then it locks the placeholders for formatting.

Hi John, thanks for the quick response. Unfortunately the Reset button is greyed out, so not an option.

After changing the formatting on a slide master or slide layout, choose Home>Reset on the slide to force an update from the master or layout.

If you can't get it working, please upload the file to a cloud service, then post a share link here, so we can tell you exactly what the problem is.
