Writing and drawing on a Word doc - help please!

When I use my HP Envy stylus to write or draw on a word document using the colour white, it writes in black so I can't see what I've written. (The background is black.)

If I write in black ink, I can't see it as I write either (very awkward!), but it then changes to white once I've finished!

How can I change this so that I can see what I'm writing, both during the writing process, and after I've finished. It's so frustrating!

    Hi Noi,

The color-switching behavior you're seeing is because the background of your document is black. The color of the ink is changed after you're done writing it to ensure that black ink can be read even though the background is so dark.

In order to see your ink clearly both while you're writing it and after it's done, I recommend temporarily turning the background of your Word document white while you draw.

If the background is dark because you're using Word's Dark Mode, you can switch to a white background by clicking the "Switch Modes" button on the View tab.

If the background is dark because Windows is set to a high contrast theme, then you can switch to a white background by going to the Windows Settings app, clicking the "Ease of Access" button, and selecting the "High contrast" tab on the left. Either use the "Turn on high contrast" toggle to turn the mode off or select a different high contrast theme that renders the background of the Word document white.

    Hope this helps,

    Heather

    Hi Noi,

Thanks for contacting us and sorry for the inconveniences,

One option is to use the Ink Editor feature in Microsoft Office for Windows. This feature allows you to use natural gestures with your digital pen to edit your document. You can also change the color, transparency, and line width of your pen, convert your ink drawings to text or shapes, and use a ruler. To use this feature, you need to:

    • Open the Word app on your Windows device and open the document you want to edit.
    • Click or tap Draw > Ink Editor.
    • Click or tap Pens and choose a pen tool.
    • Click or tap Ink Color and choose a color for your pen. You can also click or tap Ink Thickness and adjust the weight of your pen.
    • Start writing or drawing on your document. You can use gestures such as circling, crossing out, joining, splitting, or highlighting to edit your document.
    • To erase your drawings, click or tap Eraser and drag it over the area you want to erase.
    • To change the format of your ink drawings, select them by dragging a selection box around them with your pen or mouse. Right-click the selected drawing and select Format Ink. Change color, transparency, and line width options from the Format Ink pane.
    • To convert your ink drawings to text or shapes, select them by dragging a selection box around them with your pen or mouse. Right-click the selected drawing and select Ink to Text or Ink to Shape. Choose a language for text conversion or a shape for shape conversion from the menu that appears.
    • To use a ruler, click or tap Draw > Ruler. Drag the ruler with two fingers or with one finger and another finger on Shift key. Rotate it with two fingers or with one finger and another finger on Alt key. Align it with other objects by using snap points that appear when you move it.
