Microsoft Office 365 and Office (32 bit) (odt4DA4.tmp.exe) high CPU usage Windows 10

In task manager-> Processes, there is a program running as Microsoft Office 365 and Office (32 bit) which is taking very high CPU (around 20-25%). And sometimes I see that there are 3 or 4 duplicate tasks of the same program each taking 20% ish and total 100% cpu usage, making laptop fan go crazy.

When I right clicked on Microsoft Office 365 and Office (32 bit) and went to properties->General, the program name comes out as odt4DA4.tmp.exe with C:\Windows\Temp as its location. Not sure what is going on and if the program is legit. I believe it is legit because under Digital Signatures tab, there are 2 Microsoft Corporation signatures.

If anyone could help with this that would be great. Thanks.

This suggestion unfortunately doesn't help with this issue - the Office settings mentioned aren't present in Microsoft 365.

I have the same issue as the OP, same process, also causing my fan to go crazy. When I sort by CPU usage in task manager, it's almost always the top consumer. And if I "end task" the process, it starts itself back up.

Redditors are also asking this question: https://www.reddit.com/r/Office365/comments/18xo0ye/persistent\_high\_cpu\_usage\_by\_mysterious\_microsoft/

It would be great to figure out what it's doing that's so important that it needs to eat up our CPUs...

    Hi Yogesh

I'm AnnaThomas and I'd happily help you with your question. In this Forum, we are Microsoft consumers just like yourself no one here is a Microsoft employee.

“In this article ( http://answers.microsoft.com/thread/13d98e42-7965-47b3-8cbd-18dd76dabae3 ), Rohn007 shows the solution to the problem can be solved by following these steps: “

HARDWARE ACCELERATION - COMBO OF OPTIONS TO BE INVESTIGATED / CHANGED https://answers.microsoft.com/thread/b2656170-a2cd-47d5-8f22-35ab6027d3df?page=4&msgId=99dbb0f8-74b5-49d9-b4fc-59dd2dd15337

I systematically went through every single option disabling things that might effect it, and the dumbest solution and dumbest option for me was simple... . By “toggle”, I mean change current setting, for these 2 or 3 options (depending on version) try all of the combinations of the settings on and off. The specific options you see depend on the Office application and its year (2010/2013/2016).

    1. Go to File menu > Options command > Advanced option

    2. In the Display section:

Toggle the check box for “Disable Hardware Acceleration” (2010 / 2013 / 2016)

    1. Also try toggling the check box for “Use subpixel positioning to smooth fonts on screen” (2013 / 2016)

    2. In the General section >

Toggle the check box for “feedback animation” (2010 / 2013?)

    1. Apply the changes by clicking on Ok button at bottom of the dialog box

    2. Close Word normally

    3. Restart Word”

I hope this helps ;-), let me know if this is contrary to what you need, I would still be helpful to answer more of your questions.

    Best Regards,

    AnnaThomas

Deleting the files from c:\windows\temp mentioned in this thread worked for me. CPU/fan back to normal with no offending Office processes running.

    Thx!
