When you have a style that reads Heading 1 + After: 0 pt, Line spacing: At least 13pt.

How do I add the TOC code to that so I can automatically create a Table of Contents.

Greetings! I am Ajibola, eager to assist you with confidence and assertiveness. I guarantee to provide you with exceptional support.

To add the TOC code to a style in Word, you need to follow these steps:

    • Open the Styles pane by clicking the dialogue launcher in the Styles group on the Home tab of the ribbon.

    • Find the style that you want to add the TOC code to, such as Heading 1, and right-click on it. Select Modify from the context menu.

    • In the Modify Style dialogue box, click the Format button at the bottom left corner and select Paragraph from the drop-down menu.

    • In the Paragraph dialog box, click the Line and Page Breaks tab. Check the Outline level option and select the level that you want to assign to the style, such as Level 1. Click OK to close the Paragraph dialogue box.

    • In the Modify Style dialogue box, click OK to save the changes to the style.

    • Repeat the steps for any other styles that you want to add the TOC code to, such as Heading 2, Heading 3, etc.

    • To create a table of contents based on the styles with the TOC code, go to the References tab of the ribbon and click the Table of Contents button. Select one of the built-in options or click Custom Table of Contents to customize the appearance and layout of the table of contents.

    @ Ajibola Olanipekun

A Table of Contents field cannot be added to a style. Period.

You should delete this misleading post. You are leading people far afield.

How do I add the TOC code to that so I can automatically create a Table of Contents.

The first is not a style as such, but rather is Heading 1 style with direct formatting added.

If this is what you want, generally, simply modify the Heading 1 style. If it is something you want different and reuse in the document, create a new paragraph style based on your formatting and use that when you want that formatting.

Such a heading will be included in an automatic Table of Contents by default.

An automatic Table of Contents, in Word, is a field, not a style. It does use the TOC styles to determine how the various entries work.

If you have a Table of Contents set up that you like, you can save that field as a Building Block, perhaps adding it to the Table of Contents Gallery. That does not, though, carry with it the TOC styles.

You are describing two things: formatting and table of contents inclusion. While these are related, they are not one and the same.

Starting with the formatting part, in most cases, when you see a description such as "Heading 1 + After: 0 pt, Line spacing: At least 13 pt," that is not a style but a style plus direct formatting. Below, I am showing an example of this, with some text selected. The style applied to the text is Heading 1 and some additional formatting has been added (font size 28 pt, line spacing at least 13 pt):

    .

You can incorporate the direct formatting into the style from the Home tab. Find Heading 1 in the style gallery, right-click it and choose Update Heading 1 to Match Selection.

    .

Regarding the TOC inclusion, since Heading 1 paragraphs are included in a table of contents by default, you shouldn't need to do anything more.

However, you would want to update your table of contents, if you already inserted one.
