How do I format just a standard document?

I just tried to create a word document by selecting blank document and copied some text into the blank document. When I then open the document it doesn't even look like a document but shows text in the top upper left corner of what appears to be a landscape layout. It is also apparently by default not editable and I can't figure out how to make it editable. I am getting a message that my document will be upgraded to the newest format which might cause MINOR layout changes. Do you have instructions somewhere that I can access? I do not understand "compatibility" in this context. What is the "new format"? I've used word for years so I'm not sure why it is so different that I can't use it to create a simple document and it is very frustrating to try to figure how to get around the changes without spending a tremendous amount of time. I am paying for Microsoft 365 and using it on a PC running Windows 11. Doesn't Word update with regular windows updates?

When a document opens in Compatibility Mode, it just means it was created in a previous version of Word. There is no need to update it to the latest format unless the version of Word you're using has features that were not available in the previous version.

What you're seeing in regard to format suggests that you may have Track Changes enabled. The space allotted for the "markup area" can force the text into the top left corner and/or extend the apparent width of the paper. Even without Track Changes, the markup area may be displayed if the document contains comments (even a single comment on one page).

Greetings! I am Ajibola, and I am eager to assist you with confidence and assertiveness. I guarantee to provide you with exceptional support.

It seems that your document is in compatibility mode, which means that it was created or saved in an older format of Word, such as Word 97-2003. Compatibility mode preserves the layout and features of the document, but it also limits some of the new features and functionality of Word 365.

You can convert your document to the new format of Word 365, which is called Word Document (.docx). To do this, go to File > Info and select Convert. This will upgrade your document to the latest format and enable all the new features and functionality of Word 365. However, this might also cause some minor layout changes, such as spacing, alignment, or fonts.

You can edit your document in compatibility mode without converting it to the new format. To do this, go to File > Info and select Edit Anyway. This will allow you to make changes to your document, but you won't be able to use some of the new features and functionality of Word 365. You can also check the compatibility issues by selecting Check for Issues >Check Compatibility.
